I am pondering the purchase of a metal detector. Could someone please provide information as to a quality detector for a beginner?
Thank you in advance |

I love digging for goodies! I run a White Spectra V3I, and it is thy shit. Consider this a tag so I can add pics of my finds.
Also Whites site |

I bought a Garrett Ace 250 last year and have found a bunch of cool stuff with it. They are cheap and geared toward the beginner but work really well. Get a Garrett Pro Pointer to go with it and it makes locating your find much easier. When I started, I didn't have the Pro Pointer and found stuff, but the Pro Pointer make pinpointing your finds a snap! |

I have an Ace 250 that I use down at the beach to pickup money and jewerly left by the tourists. Last year I found a little over $100 worth of coin and gold. |

I bought an ace250 as well. Seems to be the best bang for the buck before you start going for the $800-1000+ range. I think I paid around $250 or so for my detector and accessories. Difference with the big boys is better depth and type of metal sensitivity from what I could tell.
Check out http://forum.treasurenet.com/ its the arfcom of metal detecting. |

The Garret Ace 250 is hands down the best entry level detector that you will never outgrow.
http://www.kellycodetectors.com/indexmain.php is where I've gotten all of my detectors and supplies. The package deals are great––make sure you get a pinpointer when you buy your detector. They cut the digging time down dramatically. Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions. |

I too bought an Ace 250 in June. Lots of fun on the beach, but after 2 weeks at 2 different beaches, only found $6 in change. Lots of buried beer cans and bottle tops. Granted, only spent about a total of 3 hours searching.
I do have a few old home sites friends own that I'm going to hit when the temps finally get below 100 degrees. Both sites date back to before the Civil War. Check out treasure net.com. It the ARF.com of detector sites. BTW, you think gun owners have a bad time enjoying our hobby? You better check your local ordnances on MD'n. Lots of heavy fines are being handed out in parks and public areas. And just wait until you read about the Archeology laws in place that can land you behind bars or heavy fines. Most of the bad rep come from the same type of slobs that shoot up gun ranges and leave trash everywhere. Digging holes improperly (yes, there is a correct method to dig holes) and leaving dead spots and holes. |

Do NOT buy a cheap-ass, low-quality, low-featured machine. Buy something in the $500-$900 range, and learn to use it. You WILL enjoy it more, because you WILL find lots more. Trust me. If you do not have a lot of cash, look for a good used one on Craigslist. |
