Anyone take Metformin?

My blood work came back and my glucose level was up some and he put me on this 1000mg twice a day.

I have been on it for a month and the only bad side effect is tired all the time, really tired.

This is weird, but my wife takes it like the opposite of birth control. She doesn't have any signs of diabetes or anything, but it "fixes" her hormones so she can get pregnant. A couple years of traditional fertility treatments didn't help, but metformin worked in a couple months. We proved it works as we had another kid last week. If any of you have wives with "Thin PCOS" (maybe even standard PCOS), look into it.

I take lots of naps and must really coffee up if I want to get anything done.

No coffee>>>no work.  Naps sure do feel good though.  I also feel weaker
if I do any hard physical work.

Not bad all things considered.

I have been on it for almost 5 years, it still keeps me feeling tired. Unfortunately, it is the most effective drug  for my management.

It can reduce B-12 levels, which can lead to a lack of energy. Your doctor should do a blood workup after you've been on it for a while.

Been taking it for over 12 years now. The main side affect or me is extreme fatigue.

My wife took it after the doc prescribed it to her because it takes longer for her to absorb glucose. It made her shit all the time and made her feel sick, so she stopped taking it.
Then the doc said to her "oh, well....your sugar levels aren't that bad anyways"....
5/8/2014 1:08:56 PM EDT

500mg twice a day, but my glucose levels have improved enough that I will likely only take it once a day. Doc says that if I really show some discipline and hard work, that I may go off medication altogether.

My wife takes it for PCOS. She's never had any problems with lack of energy, but I think she also takes Bcomplex vitamins so that may offset it.

I just started it about two months ago.  850mg twice daily.  In the bathroom all of the time.

Switched to 1000mg Extended release 1x daily a month ago.  Cut down on the bathroom runs, but my numbers are a little higher on average.

I haven't noticed being more fatigued than usual, but I've been taking a multi vitamin daily in addition to the daily fruits/vegetables.

Drink lots of water.  Your body is trying to piss out the extra sugars.  It leads to dehydration and fatigue.

500 mg 2x/day.  some foods make me need to maintain a low orbit close to a restroom... other foods, not so much.  Definitely notice it if I eat tavern food (fried/greasy, which never used to bother me)...

ETA:
Fatigue is a big issue with me as well...

500mg once a day for the last three years. No issues I'm aware of.

I can't tell if I'm anymore tired or not.....I retired from 30+ years of night shift at about the same time so anything was a improvement.

Wow, That explains everything. I wish  someone would have told me about that 2 years go.

Op, I started out at 1000mg a day, then 500mg now on 250mg. At the higher level of metformin goose shitting was the big side effect. Now at lower dose, it keeps every running smoothly.

Without taking metformin?

Between 120 and 145 in the morning before any food.

Urination is normal as always.

With the metformin almost the same

The doc shouldn't have written you a script.  He should have worked with you too find what foods you can cut out to undo the damage you've done. You're producing too much insulin and are desensitized to it.   Metformin is a temporary patch,  that will hide the problem,  not fix it.

The reason I asked is that extreme tiredness will come hand in hand with very high glucose and A1C.

So, I don't have any ideas about why you are tired.

I agree with a comment above that you could probably stop the Metformin if you hammer your diet and get some exercise.  30 minutes of exercise does me more good than about anything else.

You are pre diabetic. Most docs now will start you on metformin which
Increases your bodies sensitivity to insulin.

You must lose weight. You must exercise. You must carb count.

Or glyburide is next then insulin.

You are at a cross roads in your life. Give up and insulin. Heart attacks and renal failure are in your future.

Not exactly, it's not appropriate to make all encompassing statements like that.
Simply put  "Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production", if someone is insulin resistant, their liver will pump-out extra glucose, even when they don't need it.
Metformin is one good way to stop the liver from "leaking extra glucose"
So, it makes sense to add metformin, along with proper eating habits and increased physical activity, and a patient can recover.
However, if  hormones are all out of wack, then metformin may become a chronic drug, to prevent things from getting worse.

Nope. She did an oral glucose test and it took longer than normal to absorb sugar.
He said she was borderline pre-diabetic, and put her on metformin then later said she probably didn't need it..

Lots of WTF.

Yes lots of wtf. Not like high blood glucose levels could do anything negative to the body over time. Surely the doc is off his rocker.

Also when he/she asks you "what do you think is wrong" he is ascertaining you knowledge of your disease, interest in your health, weird stories you may have read/ heard and possible treatment compliance. He probably could have phrased it a little better, but patients often have interesting beliefs and sometimes getting them on the table for discussion is necessary before actual medical intervention. And sometimes the patient is right and gives some great information.

I would imagine it would help the pancreas not burn out it's beta cells because it blocks the hepatic release of glucose for no reason.
