Anyone take Metformin? My blood work came back and my glucose level was up some and he put me on this 1000mg twice a day. I have been on it for a month and the only bad side effect is tired all the time, really tired. |

| This is weird, but my wife takes it like the opposite of birth control. She doesn't have any signs of diabetes or anything, but it "fixes" her hormones so she can get pregnant. A couple years of traditional fertility treatments didn't help, but metformin worked in a couple months. We proved it works as we had another kid last week. If any of you have wives with "Thin PCOS" (maybe even standard PCOS), look into it. |

Don't notice the tiredness, I take one in the morning and one after dinner. |

Unfortunately, it is the most effective drug for my management. |

My wife took it after the doc prescribed it to her because it takes longer for her to absorb glucose. It made her shit all the time and made her feel sick, so she stopped taking it.
Then the doc said to her "oh, well....your sugar levels aren't that bad anyways"....

I just started it about two months ago. 850mg twice daily. In the bathroom all of the time.
Switched to 1000mg Extended release 1x daily a month ago. Cut down on the bathroom runs, but my numbers are a little higher on average. I haven't noticed being more fatigued than usual, but I've been taking a multi vitamin daily in addition to the daily fruits/vegetables. Drink lots of water. Your body is trying to piss out the extra sugars. It leads to dehydration and fatigue. |

Been taking it for over 12 years now. The main side affect or me is extreme fatigue. Wow, That explains everything. I wish someone would have told me about that 2 years go. Op, I started out at 1000mg a day, then 500mg now on 250mg. At the higher level of metformin goose shitting was the big side effect. Now at lower dose, it keeps every running smoothly. |

Or your wife has insulin resistance? |

He should have worked with you too find what foods you can cut out to undo the damage you've done. You're producing too much insulin and are desensitized to it. Metformin is a temporary patch, that will hide the problem, not fix it. |

With the metformin almost the same The reason I asked is that extreme tiredness will come hand in hand with very high glucose and A1C. So, I don't have any ideas about why you are tired. I agree with a comment above that you could probably stop the Metformin if you hammer your diet and get some exercise. 30 minutes of exercise does me more good than about anything else. |
|
Same here..........I have noticed tiredness as well. The Dr. told me it was a normal side effect, and I have been taking it for a month. It doesn't bother me as much now, and I have started working on my diet and exercising............I hope to be off of it someday soon

You are pre diabetic. Most docs now will start you on metformin which
Increases your bodies sensitivity to insulin. You must lose weight. You must exercise. You must carb count. Or glyburide is next then insulin. You are at a cross roads in your life. Give up and insulin. Heart attacks and renal failure are in your future. |

Metformin is a temporary patch, that will hide the problem, not fix it. Not exactly, it's not appropriate to make all encompassing statements like that. Simply put "Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production", if someone is insulin resistant, their liver will pump-out extra glucose, even when they don't need it. Metformin is one good way to stop the liver from "leaking extra glucose" So, it makes sense to add metformin, along with proper eating habits and increased physical activity, and a patient can recover. However, if hormones are all out of wack, then metformin may become a chronic drug, to prevent things from getting worse. |

Or your wife has insulin resistance? Nope. She did an oral glucose test and it took longer than normal to absorb sugar. He said she was borderline pre-diabetic, and put her on metformin then later said she probably didn't need it.. Lots of WTF. Docs most favorite question: "what do you think is wrong with you?" The last time I checked, neither of us have an MD or DO behind our name. |

My wife's best friend is an MD and tells me all the time how dangerous my diet is. Then she argues with my test results. |

Lots of WTF. Docs most favorite question: "what do you think is wrong with you?" The last time I checked, neither of us have an MD or DO behind our name. Yes lots of wtf. Not like high blood glucose levels could do anything negative to the body over time. Surely the doc is off his rocker. Also when he/she asks you "what do you think is wrong" he is ascertaining you knowledge of your disease, interest in your health, weird stories you may have read/ heard and possible treatment compliance. He probably could have phrased it a little better, but patients often have interesting beliefs and sometimes getting them on the table for discussion is necessary before actual medical intervention. And sometimes the patient is right and gives some great information. help physicians help you |

Quoted: A friend of mine's girlfriend is from the Ukraine and is a research scientist/professor at a local university. Her only research area is Metformin. She says it's a miracle drug and may end up being used for several medical conditions. The use of metformin in treating prostate cancer is looking promising after a recent study. |

I would imagine it would help the pancreas not burn out it's beta cells because it blocks the hepatic release of glucose for no reason. |
