Do you think the Obama will switch the US to metric?

[#2]
No, he doesn't do anything right.

4/7/2010 2:44:45 PM EDT
[#3]
Never considered it, but I hope so.

If there was one thing Carter did right, it was pushing the US toward metric.  Reagan, in one of his less brilliant moves, abandoned the concept.

We should have been metric by the 1960s.  I don't know why we don't change.  Do you have any idea how expensive it is for manufacturers to maintain two standards?
4/7/2010 2:45:04 PM EDT
[#4]
We really should. I mean it IS a lot easier/quicker to use.

4/7/2010 2:45:50 PM EDT

honestly, the whole increments of 10 thing is pretty easy.
I wouldn't mind one bit.

As someone that has just rebuilt a 2003 chevrolet S10 from the block up, there is very little, if anything, that is  SAE on that motor.

Nope.  Would be nice though.  I like the metric system.

We should have switched long ago. At least for tools and fasteners. I was working on a

friends car the other day and it still had a combination of metric and standard bolts. It

is just aggravating.

No, but we should.

Till you have to build a house.

Seriously. Imperial measurement lends it's self to a lot of really useful fractions/ratios that make sense when you are building livable spaces. Dividing a meter into thirds is no fun.

Unless we switch to the metric system, we'll never make it to the Moon!

When I was in elementary school, our class was told by our teacher that the United States would be using the metric system by 1980.

Fuck the godamn metric system.

Being a land surveyor , the fucking metric system SUCKS.

Say your setting the property corners on some dudes lot.

Shoot the distance, your off 1.23 METERS  Whats the first FUCKING THING YOU DO?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Figure in your head how many godamn feet it is, and move that far , shoot it again.

Fuck that noise. And fuck the metric system.

Damn, I thought this was going to be a thread about the band "Metric"

Their various versions of Combat Baby  and Combat Baby too  and  played live/acoustic  (and others) are great, and Emily Haines  is babe-o-liscious...

Every mighty mild seventies child beats me..

i wish we were on the sytem already. i mean,  fuck all the culture shit, theres a point that the metric system has to offer in todays world that wouldve been arbitrary 100 yrs ago

now is the time for metricism!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We won't but we should convert to Metric.

Eventually, yes.

Long overdue, in my opinion.

I wish we would, for now I have to deal with both on a daily basis.

We build stuff worldwide and have To dual dim everything.

the point would be not to convert it to feet. you think American land can only be measured in feet! lol you would be doing surveys in nothing but metric so no need to convert, the whole point.

I almost set a 1985 S-10 on fire because I got pissed off at having to switch between 20 different metric and SAE sockets while doing some engine work on it.

There's nothing stopping any one of you from going metric, right now. Measure everything in metric, if you want. What's the problem?

Who controls the
British Crown?

Who keeps the metric system down?

We do, we do.

Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?

We do, we do.

Who robs cave fish of their sight?

Who rigs every Oscar night?

Hey dumbass-we've been using nothing but metric for at least 30 years now.  Instead of making ignorant slurs, why don't you get your facts straight?  There is practically NO industry or food production of any size in this counrty that doesn't use metric.

Difference of semantics between the poll and the question posted by the OP,

I think Obama will push for the switch.
I'd be surprised if America went for it.

Why do you guys still build cars with both standard and metric fasteners. That is the thing that

irks me. It should be one or the other.

I'd have to look at the detailing done recently where I work for Ford, but they have been the holdouts as far as the Detroit 3 in demanding dual.  If they went straight metric it has only been in the past couple years.  I design mechanically in SolidWorks straight metric- the Final Doc people convert to customer ACAD standards, but I used to have to work within the confines of the customers specs- yuck!  Allison used to want dual with English as PRIMARY- that was doubly irritating.

4/7/2010 4:20:39 PM EDT
[#49]
I use both systems and interchange between them every day. Honestly, metric is overrated. You can still fuck up conversions very easily, and the interchangeability sometimes makes it worse.  It's especially true when exponents are involved. Example: A lot of people mess up 1000L to 1 m^3. They just assume that since a liter is a base unit, and a meter is base unit, then the conversion must be 1:1 because metric is so user-friendly . If you were using gallons and cubic feet, you'd either leave it in that unit or just look up the number since you know it's going to be something weird like 7.48. They're just numbers, the best system is whatever you and the others in your field use the most.

I propose that it is our duty as Americans to force all other nations, especially the French, to start using a base-12 number system. It would be cool for using fractions, but mainly it would be to mess with their heads. If we get Hollywood and Wall Street on board, we could probably get the rest of the world else converted to America numbers in less than a decade.

I for one, don't mind having multiple standards and am not in favor of going all metric.
