It's getting ready to come out in a few days. I almost pulled the trigger on the regular Surface then was informed that the Pro will have the full Windows 8 and not the RT. I would much rather have the full version so I waited. My only understanding of a con would be the hard drive space after all of their BS is put on. Not a huge deal to me. An external hard drive stays hooked up most of the time anyway.

I'm not a big gamer, blogger or porn surfer. It would mainly be used for internet communication and Office. Any reasons not to get one?

I'm excited about it.
A friend played with one at best buy the other day and said it was thicker then he thought it was going to be and it was pretty warm to the touch.

The next gen ones might be where it's at.

No but with your requirements an Ipad or even an Andriod device would likely be better due to established platforms. I'm on the fence about the Surface Pro, if anyone can muscle in on Apple and Google's turf it's Microsoft. Tthey have the pockets, talent and general vision but their advances in this space haven't been great. True Mobile 8 is a pretty good package but it's not a 'game changer' as it would have to be to unseat either Apple/Google and R/T was/is a joke albeit for the hardware. Pro could be the camel's nose in the tent, both Apple and Google leave a lot of the enterprise/power-user experience on the floor (although both are getting there quick,) so I think it's going to be tough for MSFT. Mind you not impossible, I see the Surface Pro really killing the laptop and 'convertible' space the most as enterprise/corporate types on the go will flock to these over a traditional laptop. I think price point will be the deciding factor, last I had read MSFT was going to be around the $800 mark; I don't think that will hurt either Apple or Google for the majority of their tablet buyers, if anything it'll be a blip on the radar screen at most.

Could be wrong as MSFT could pull it off but I doubt it at this point.

Doesn't that negate the whole purpose of an ultra-portable tablet?

iPad is out. I have to use Office (PP, Excel etc) for work. The external hard drive comment was because I'm constantly having to do work on different computers so it makes things easier. It's also the size of a deck of cards.

I've played with the RT version a couple of times and the built quality was excellent.  I don't like Windows 8 on a desktop platform but for a touch screen device it works pretty well, all the reviews I've read have been very positive.  I think MS might have finally gotten it right on this one and it's been tempting me to spend my upcoming tax return money, but I'm hoping it might come down in price soon, $1000 for a tablet is into laptop territory and you can buy a heck of a laptop for that kind of money these days.

I saw the pro a couple of days ago at bestbuy.  It was much heavier than I was anticipating, it pretty much weighs the same as a laptop with the same screen size.

It has high end ultrabooks specs and it's the fastest tablet available.

It's lighter than the macbook air and it's faster and more functional than an ipad. But there are some trade offs.

64 gb no thanks.

I just got my Surface Pro 128gb.

So far,

Updating it now, next up is installing the .net SDK and then IIS, then SQL Server Express and Visual Studio.  Probably Office in there somewhere as well.  Then see what happens.

They were out of type covers but I ordered one shipped next day for $16.

This thing is really nuts.

The pen is weird.  I thought it'd be useless, but the device somehow tracks its proximity, so you get a little dot indicator under it if it's within an inch or two of the screen, which helps you land it on the right spot.  Weird but cool.

I have the RT (and it kicks ass, imo), but GET THE TYPE COVER. The touch cover is nice because of how low profile it is, but typing anything in length is a mega bitch.

I got a Asus Infinity about 8 months ago - love it for reading pdf files (technical/text books), casual web browsing, but a little unhappy with the power - but it is light.

I got a Taichi about a 3 weeks ago.  Love the full laptop/os/cpu aspect (I can run mathematica, multiple browsers, etc etc), the dual screens are a nice solid state solution to a mechanical problem.  It is a little heavy, and only has about 4 hours battery life.  I still love it.  Full laptop that functions as a portrait tablet.  Wish the screen was a little bigger though.  Difficult trade offs any way you look at it.

I have the 128GB SP and like it a lot so far. Only had it 5 days.

I am a designer/artist by trade, and I like being able to plug into a big monitor for work and take it into meetings as well. I installed all the software I use for design. Performance is snappy, but not a powerhouse obviously.

It is more pricey than a tablet so the only thing that put me over was being able to install full software programs I use every day.

Sounds like Windows 8 ReTarded, not "full" windows 8.  Rather deceptive of that site to not be clear on this issue.

I'm installing SQL Server 2012 on my Surface Pro as we speak, fucking thing is awesome.  A minute ago I installed Firefox and tested a jquery draggable bug in the two versions.  Turns out IE 10 has a touch-screen glitch fixed by a CSS patch.  I can't even describe how fucking awesome it was to do all that on a fucking tablet.

ETA: IIS w/ asp.net, as well as the Windows SDK w/ .NET 4.5 and Office 2012 Pro are already on.  Also copied my favorites over from desktop.

I think the surface is a laptop trying to be the tablet. It's not going to work. I think the reason why the iPad is successful in its own race is because it keeps things simple and sweet. Browse the net, watch movies, listen to music, easy emailing, eye candy apps, etc. It's a device that at the end of the day, if you just want to sit back and enjoy a movie or listen to music, you do exactly that. The interface was designed for touching from the start, unlike a regular OS that has to have add-ons to make things bigger but still look and feel awkward. Also there's no need to have unnecessary resource hogging background stuff like antivirus and management softwares. There's no need to waste time fixing things, just do what you do and be done with it.

With a regular OS, you would have to find software to install and configure confusing settings. I understand the nerdy side of things when you want to SSH into your super secret Linux box, but 99% of regular users don't give a rats ass about that.

I'm a programmer, but I love my iPhone and iPad, I use them daily, for personal use. Not an Apple fan boy though. My main system is a custom PC, newegg.com and all that.

Honestly it's a waste of money if you already have a laptop to work remotely. Only buy it if you know you will get lots of use out of it. Save your money stacking ammo or gold and silver.

I just replaced a disk hard drive on my 2009 MacBook Pro with a SSD and it works like a dream.

At the end of the day, you stick with what makes you happy. I'm sure some here are hardcore gunners and precious metal stackers but if you live your life like you're waiting for that SHTF day to come, you're just wasting your life away.

Rabbit, I think the key point here is that this is targeted at people who don't already have laptops.  And it's specifically geared toward people who create content, rather than just consuming it.  In that sense, it fits in well with a lot of MS's other development tools and product lines.

If you look at the "Any Programmers Around" thread you will see that I'm a strong supporter of Microsoft.  However on the Surface Pro they have priced themselves out of the market.  If you get the high end version with a keyboard you are looking at $1,200.  The laptop I bought cost me half that much and it is more powerful and has more space than the Surface pro.  The pro is also a half pound heavier than the RT version and last I heard it included a powered cooling fan.  Also battery life is much reduced because of running the fan.

It's a cool toy but if all you need is to surf the internet and use Word.  Get an Android tablet and start using Office365 or the free Sky Drive from Microsoft.

It is competitively priced.

If Microsoft is trying to get a foot hold in the tablet market then they are way over priced.  If I want a laptop then I'll buy a laptop type device.  If I want a tablet to surf the internet and look at Office documents then I'll go with something else much cheaper.  The OP was asking about those two things.  Spending $1,200 to do just those things is ridiculous.

Mine is coming on the first.  I'm not going to compare it to an iPad or an Android tablet.  I'm not going to look at it as an iPad Killer,  I'm going to look at it as a Windows 8 computer and hold it to that standard.  But I got about a week before I can give any real comments about it.  At the very least I hope this opens the door for full blown operating systems to start showing up on a tablet.

Because of the storage limitations I don't expect to be editing large video files, but I have high hopes I can do just about anything else with it.  I think I'll be pleasantly surprised with it.  I definetly plan to see how my portable blu-ray burner works with it, as well as other usb devices.

That is why they have windows RT.  That is their competitor to android tablets/ipad.

The Surface Pro is an ultrabook in a tablet form factor.  And it has an active digitizer which is not available in a lot of tablets/laptops.  The only other product that competes directly with it feature for feature is the Samsung ATIV smart pc 700T which is inferior in several ways.

Plenty of people buy $1000+ computers to do basic tasks that could be accomplished with computers costing half as much.  Point it regarding portability there really isn't anything with similar specs that compares to the surface Pro.

My "scientific" experiment showed the following for light usage. Charged it to 100% around 10:30AM today. Reading emails, browsing the web (ar15.com), installing Office, looking at news/finance feeds brought it to 62% by 5:00PM.

Tomorrow I will run Netflix and I'll bet it lasts 3-4 hours.

Ok ran Netflix at 1:45PM today at 100% power. By 2:45PM it was at 69%. Ran a 3D video game until 3:15PM then back to Netflix and it died at around 5PM.

So a little over 3 hours on processor heavy stuff.
