Long story short my father wants to split his two safes between myself and my sister (very stupid reason but it works out better in the long run for us.) I dont believe I have much choice other than to put it in my basement. I have lots of stairs and a turn then more stairs to my front door that I doubt seriously we could manage. The basement has a double door that opens right up we could wheel it right in no issues. I am home all the time right now.
My basement like many others can be damp. Very rarely water might come in, a puddle in a corner more or less. It has to be an absolute monsoon for an extended period of time for it to happen though. We have had our basement 'fixed' to deal with the water and it is much better now than when we bought it. I have a dehumidifier set to maximum that empties into a sump pump and I havent heard it run in months. That being said if i make a platform off the ground to keep it off the concrete floor do you think it will be okay? I can put gauges etc in the safe to monitor humidity and keep it as low as possible. Will this work long term presuming water/humidity is kept to an absolute minimum and monitored carefully?

edit: concrete floors and block walls, by definition not a finished basement but we keep the lawnmower, ATV, do all our laundry there, I have a large drumset down there as well, TV etc etc.

It will work. Keep it off the ground, a decent de-humidifier in the basement and then invest in a smaller de-humidifier for the inside of safe.

Keep guns well lubed and you'll be gtg.

Are you going to make us wait for the second coming of Christ to see what's in it?

No?

Not interested, then.

good to know. I doubt he will go for it, he is totally against a safe being in the basement. Its my only option though. Its going in there eventually though...

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I am in a similar position...walk out basement, steps, tight turns and narrow hallways in the upstairs living area...which means any safe I get would need to go in the basement.  I am interested in hearing more about what you intend to use for a platform.

Dont forget to bolt the platform down and bolt the safe to the platform

2x4's and alot of them.
I just talked to him on the phone and ill bet he totally bails on the idea now and will go back on what he said. My father is a terrible 'indian giver.' "you can keep it as long as you want..." = 2 weeks tops.
Years ago my sister lived here with her husband. He kept a gun in the basement, a single shot rifle. The basement used to flood terribly. It rusted of course. When they got divorced he left the rifle here, when we bought the house from her I got it, my father saw how rusted it was and thinks now all basements = rusty guns. We have since fixed the issue but in his mind it doesnt matter. I doubt he will go through with the whole idea I was more or less just curious...

Make concrete forms out of 2 X 8, mix concrete in the basement, pour.........air cure for ? 30 ? days, install safe with golden rod inside.

Just build a pad/platform out of treated 2x4s.  Measure dimensions of safe, make the platform about 3 inches wider all around.

I suggest putting a rubber mat between the safe and the wood.  Treated lumber is rarely dry and the chemicals might cause corrosion.  You can get the industrial floor tiles at Lowes/Home Depot for pretty cheap.

Good idea here, too.

that is pretty much what I envisioned.
