According to that guy, the United States may not be advanced and exceptional because not enough Socialism:
But don’t rush to celebrate American exceptionalism: If IQs are dropping in other advanced countries but not here, maybe that means we’re not really an advanced country (too much poverty, too little social support). ETA: LOL -> There are also other possibilities, largely untested, such as global warming making food less nutritious |

One interesting thing of note is kids books. They have gotten terrible and very dumbed down. There is a concerted effort within library systems to eradicate any book older than 15-20 years old. Out with a Tale of Two Cities and in with Bobby Has Two Dads. |

The main premise of Idiocracy is scary, but if you have an understanding of genetics, even just back to grade school science, Gregor Mendel, beans, and recessive genes, you should know that breeding and IQ is not a straight line phenomena.
Further, IQ/intelligence is likely to be multi-factoral, and not one gene, or even one standout gene, which scrambles it further. Then there's the issue of IQ/intelligence being a somewhat subjective subject. You take Stewart who's a math PhD with an IQ of 128, and DeShawn from the hood who tested at 95. However, DeShawn can navigate a complex set of interpersonal relationships of the hood, allies and enemies that Stewart never could, even if you normalized a set of people to his academic culture, because Stewart is functionally retarded in terms of having nearly zero social/emotional intelligence. Take away the factor that the fear that "society is dumbing down" goes back at least as far as 2000 year old Roman graffiti, things aren't really bad at all. Then there is the whole other fact that environment can actually turn genes on and off, nutrition, neglect, trauma can all impact IQ, regardless of inheritance. So to a degree, obsessing over Idiocracy is in of itself Idiocracy...

The real issue is not the percentage of smart people. It's if smart people are being followed and listened to.
And technology, all the way back to the printing press, makes it possible for smart people's ideas to reach many. Eveyone getting stupid isn't really possible. What is a problem is people following false "stupid" information, like anti-vaxxers, or assuming that "intellectuals' are "smart" just because they're in academia. |
