This site has the best tactical games ever published - the WWII ones in particular.

http://www.battlefront.com

One involves several Allied Armored battles between D-Day to V-E day, another involves the various Soviet Tank battles, and a third has to do with the Desert campaigns.  They are meticulously researched so that such things as the angle on the soviet tank turrets at the point of impact is taken into account.  There are free demos you can download.

The games you want to check out are:

Combat Mission:  Beyond Overlord
Combat Mission:  Barbarossa to Berlin
Combat Mission:  Afrika Corp

Set up a solid defense system, and then go nuclear.  My big beef with Generals is that the first person to launch his or her super weapon will probably win.  I think you can turn super weapons off, but that doesn't negate the problem of bonuses that you can cash in your general points for (artillery, AC-130, etc).

I liked Red Alert 2 a whole lot more.  I couldn't get really get excited about RA3 for some reason.  It looked a little too cheesy.

Dunn Kempf, ... if you can find a copy.

Very cool, VERY realistic. Soviet/Warsaw Pact invasion of West Germany scenario.

Used as a training aid in an Army ROTC class I took. We (US/NATO) were extremely lucky and dropped an artillery round right into the open commander's hatch of a T-72.

It did not buff out.

ALL POLITICIANS should be required to beat 3 hard opponents in at least 3 rts games to qualify, and be at least 1000 level at chess.
It teaches cause and effect and permutations on a theme very quickly.

Actually, while playing the Chinese campaign against the GLA, they launched a SCUD storm attack on my base. Damn near wiped the whole thing out, left me with maybe 15% of what I started with. My two Overlord tanks survived, so I retasked them with defending the pass that led to my staging area. I think one was set up with a propaganda tower, while the other had a pair of gattling guns, so they were both self healing and able to hold off any target that came at them, vehicle or infantry blitz.

My hacker farm survived so I still had funds incoming, and I managed to hold off the enemy long enough to rebuild my tank facility to strengthen the defense. With that taken care of, I managed to get farther than I started out, up to building a nuke launcher. Smacked the GLA with that and moved in to clean up what was left over.

From that battle, the lesson I learned was that the first thing to attack is the enemy's vehicle production facilities and their supply sources. That slows the enemy's advance down and allows me more time to build up my defenses.

The one thing I find myself having trouble with is forward advancement/assault troops. I'll send in a group of 5-10 tanks and 25-40 soldiers (mixed rifle infantry and rocketeers) and if they aren't wasted taking out any target in their path until they dry up, maybe half of them if not less will RTB when I call them back. I have to work on securing and holding a position in games like this.

Another thing I'm not pleased with is that none of my air strikes ever survive. All of these, I'm trying to work on. When MAG comes out, I want to be a efficient OIC.

Any tips or strats you'd recommend?

I only play Generals and Zero Hour because I like the modern day setting and use of tech. The rest of the series, I never got into.

take control of the money first.

some times I will send a build unit into the enemys supply and build a chaingun/laser/tunel
and blast their resorce gatherers and then capture their supply station.

or set up a good defence and walk it forward, very few mobile units and lots of stationary ones with a few air craft or scud launchers to take out out of  range threats.

generals cheats bad though, you can blow an opponents building 99% away while he is building it but if he finishes it, it is 100% .
I also see terrorist forces come out of destroyed tunnels.

Nothing out there quite like that any more. Takes a day just to read to manual to learn how to play anymore.

Well, playing the campaign is a completely different beast than playing a human opponent, which is what I was talking about.  If you want a real challenge, I suggest playing the Generals mode, where you play against the different Generals.  Its frustrating on the harder levels, and the only way to win is by trial and error.

I got rid of Generals and Zero Hour some time ago, so I don't remember most specific maps.  In general, I almost always set up a strong defense, and build experience points by letting the enemy run into them.  When I get enough points, I acquire the artillery, or AC-130 gunship, MOAB, etc.  I'll build a good, diverse fighting force and lure the enemy troops outside the base.  Destroy them, and methodically pick off base defenses with the flame cannon or tomahawk missiles.

I don't remember if the armor upgrade for the MiGs is in Generals or just Zero Hour, but it seems to help tremendously.  Regardless, the MiGs seem pretty fragile.

For board games, the best, by far, is World In Flames.

The best beer and pretzels military board game is Naval War.

Best computer game is Harpoon.
