So a guy at Wal-Mart told me today that an AR-15 mag will work in a mini 14. I have never handled a mini 14 so I don't know if it will work or not. Tell me if this is BS or not

They look similar but won't (in stock forms anyway)

Just like anything else, it's all about the money.

It's too bad Ruger didn't make them compatible with AR mags.

Despite not being accurate once the barrel heated up, I think alot more people would have brought them as a cheap beater guns.

Ramline AR mags didn't work much at all.

Mine would spew its guts out if you shook it even a little. Kinda like a nephew.

Ramline mags don't work in ANYTHING.

ETA:  Stick to factory mags for the Mini-14, unless you happen across some of the old Precision Industries mags.

They made one that one end was for the mini, the other was for the AR. So you could load 10-15 rounds in each end and use them in both rifles.
Other than that, an AR mag will NOT work in a mini, or vice versa.

If Ruger sold 20 and 30 round mags for a reasonable price, that alone would make the Mini more popular.  At least for a beater gun.

I met Bill Ruger once.  Definitely an interesting character.

The only mini-14 mags that I would recommend for a "my life depands on it" situation is the factory 20 rd mags.  The pro-mag 20 rd mags are ok for range use.  I have yet to find a decent 30 rd mag.

They did make a 30 round smoke mag that would work in either or. They were a tight fit in an AR, and were mediocre in a Mini.

Overall, good idea, poor execution.

Nope.  If you have a Mini-14, go ahead and cough up the bucks (about $50 apiece) on www.gunbroker.com to get a couple of extras.

Ruger also made a factory 30 rounder but they are scarce and expensive.

That Ramline polymer magazine that was supposed to work in both actually worked in neither.

What I'd like to know is why hasn't there been a company making actual reliable mags? Besides Ruger? Because if there was such a company that sold mags as reliable as the factory ones for a few bucks less, you KNOW people would be all over them.

And this is why I ended up selling my mini-14.  I got tired of spending money and nonfunctional mags.

Unless the seller is in Canada I'm out of luck. The US gov frowns of people exporting gun parts. There's a local rifle maker that's having such a hard time getting ARs imported that they've finally decided to buy a couple of milling machines and just make there own.

So glad I ditched my mini 14.  Much happier with my AR.

This is kind of a jacked up question cause there is only one mag
that actually works in the mini and it don't fit in the AR.

There was one made to fit into both guns but I would not say it worked.
Mini 14's suck.

I have experience with both rifles and mags.

Before you ask, no, it is not possible to modify a USGI mag to fit a Mini-14.  The receiver of the Mini is too narrow to accept the USGI mag.

If you grind away the mag, then it is ruined.  If you grind the receiver to fit the USGI mag, then there is not enough metal left to hold the mag.

It just doesn't work.

The Ramline, as other pointed out, would puke the rounds if you shook it.  I dropped on once on a carpeted floor.  EVERY ONE of the 30 rounds shot out all over the room.  Shaking it slightly would do almost as well, dumping about half the rounds.

The Ramline mags would double feed often.

In '92 or '93, before the AWB, I traded the Ramlines off for a new MWG 90 Rounder, that, believe it or not, actually functioned quite well, but was very heavy and difficult to handle.  Traded that off for a dozen USGI 30's and still use those mags.

The USA brand mags are crap, avoid them.  The metal is thin and flimsy.  The feed lips, if they are straight to begin with (and often aren't on those) will bend and flex soon.  Junk.

I had some Ruger 20's, but the mags I like best in the Mini-14 are the PMI, aka Precision Magazines, Inc, aka Federal Ordnance mags.  All the same, similar packaging down to the logo and part numbers, only the brand name on the lable was different.  Usually the floorplates were blank, but toward the end, the floorplates were labeled Precision Magazines, Inc.  They disappeared shortly after the '94 AWB.

The PMI mags are well made, and all of mine, to this day, still perform well.  They are as good as, or better in my opinion, than the Ruger factory mags.  And I could show you, holding them side by side, little construction details that made them better.

Federal Ordnance was mainly known for all of their .30 Carbine stuff... GI mags for the .30 Carbine, a nice aftermarket wood folding stock very similar to the real GI "paratrooper" stock.  They made a similar wood underfolder for the Mini-14.  Very uncomfortable.

The best folders for the Mini-14 (and the Ramline was toylike junk not even suitable for airsoft) are the Butler Creek and Choate stocks.  Of the two, I prefer the Butler Creek.  Choate's nonfolding "E2 Pistol Grip Stock" is excellent, and is good for a 50% reduction in group size all by itself.  The rifle fits very tightly in the stock, an instant bedding job.  Choate also makes a conventional synthetic (I think theirs are all Zytel) stock for the Mini-14.  They used to be available in black or camo.  I haven't seen any for a while so don't know what they still have.

Here's Choate:   www.riflestock.com   I don't see any camo.

...and was reputed to work poorly. I never had one.

I have had an AR and a Mini-14 concurrently, and tried to mix mags once. No luck.

I was at a training class and put a Mini 14 mag in my AR. It shot 1-2 times and fell out. Much hilarity ensued.
