I am of the LDS (Mormon) faith. I recieved my mission call to the Provo, Utah mission this morning. Just thought I'd give the news to the small portion of Arfcom that cares |

PROVO...?...!...?
Who did you piss off?!?! Actually, the Utah missions are some of the most successful English speaking missions in the world... And when I went to Southern Utah University, the missionaries there were from the Provo mission, and they had a lot of success among the student population... There were three sets of missionaries who did nothing but teach all day long... There were a lot of non-LDS who, once they get to Utah want to learn about the Mormon church, and have really positive experiences with the church. You will have a very positive experience in Utah... And I went to Australia, where we had to tract all day long... No effing joke... Australia Brisbane Mission 93-95... I tracted a whole flipping lot... Anyway, bro... CONGRATULATIONS!!! |

Orem is like 2 minutes north or Provo. I'm currently attending BYU, which is in Provo. |

Congrats! I served in the Ogden, UT Mission from 01-02. We were extremely busy and very sucessful! I just got back from vacationing up there for two weeks. I was able to go and see some of the people that I taught while serving. Remember that where there is much good there is plenty of bad. You will see encounter some of the most humble people then you will see those just trying to abuse the system. Do NOT let those people get to you! Feel bad for them and move on. Follow what you're Mission President advises and follow you're white handbook to a "T" and you'll do fine. Remember, every member a missionary but in Utah you will see that every member a Mission President ("Excuse me Elder, but isn't 'P-Day' on Mondays?!). Smile at those people and keep doing what you're supposed to be doing. The Utah Missions are very sucessful and very rewarding and I personally would do it all over again!
Let me know if you have any questions. Take care! |

So true! For those who didn't get the joke and might be laboring under the false assumption that non-Mormons in Utah are forced to wear crimson "U"s on their clothing, the "U" refers to the University of Utah, the premier state-sponsored school and the bitterest, most-hated rival of LDS Church-sponsored BYU. BYU, of course, is a religious institution. Students must sign an Honor Code, take classes in LDS doctrine, and live by LDS dress and behavior standards while there. The university is routinely rated the most "boring" in the nation for its lack of drinking, drugs, pre-marital sex and partying. The U of U, OTOH, is a secular institution, where despite Utah's laws and culture pretty much anything goes. For example, much of that internet pron being viewed in Utah is downloaded on campus there because the U doesn't filter content (that's also the reason they were the only ones in the state to get infected with Conflicker). So naturally, LDS Utahns tend to support BYU and non-LDS Utahns tend to support the U. However, since about 50% of the U's studentbody is LDS there are plenty of Mormons who support the U. This creates some interesting situations because in almost every LDS ward along the Wasatch Front you can find Utah and BYU grads in the same congregation. When the Utah Jazz aren't in the NBA finals, or when the Olympics aren't in town the annual BYU-Utah football game is the biggest sporting event in the state. In some wards this will produce a mild division in the congregation as both sets of fans will endeavor to portray the other as being less-favored of the Lord. BYU fans will chide Ute fans about their school's worldly ways, while Ute fans will point out that many apostles and even the prophet are U grads. In my experience it has all been good-natured ribbing between friends, but I'm sure some people take it a bit too far. In any case, the OP will be right in BYU's back yard so he will get to see this rivalry first-hand. |

Our ward's assigned High Counselman (a Marine) has stated that he won't attend another game at Rice Eccles stadium (the U of U stadium) unless he's packing heat. The last time he was there the Ute fans were throwing things at his wife while they were leaving and the only reason he didn't go hands-on was his wife's intervention. The next Sunday he outright chastized our Elder's Quorum president (a Ute fan) and declared that the EQ president had need of repentence. |

Yeah, in my childhood home, my mom was a BYU grad, and my dad was a U grad. Everything was cool, until once a year... When BYU and the U played football... The first real fight I ever witnessed between my parents was when my mom said, during a game, "The Lord won't let BYU lose..." Yeah, it was a dumb thing to say... And the resulting "disagreement" is legendary in my family... The rivalry is unreal, and (except for your friend being threatened) pretty humorous... And the funny thing is that both teams have pretty much the same number of LDS players... But the rivalry really is unreal, and hard to explain outside Utah in its deepness and bitterness... |

And the funny thing is that both teams have pretty much the same number of LDS players... But the rivalry really is unreal, and hard to explain outside Utah in its deepness and bitterness... It's ironic, because the more Utah has become like BYU the better they have become. I'm a long-time BYU fan (my mom went to BYU) and I've followed the rivalry for over 30 years now. Back in the late '70s when Mormon-haters like Wayne Howard ran the Utah program the attitude at the U was if you wanted to go on a mission, then you should go to BYU. The BYU staff really didn't have to work very hard for top recruits, especially Polynesian ones, because of the general anti-Mormon bias at the U. and other schools in the WAC. Top LDS recruits automatically went to BYU because there was no other major school that would support their choice to go on a mission. The result on the field was dramatic: The Utes were doormats of the WAC and annual patsies for BYU. The scores of the BYU-Utah games in the '70s and '80s were on the order of 56-28, 56-6, 70-31. Every 10 years or so the Utes would pull off a shocker in Salt Lake but for almost 20 years they didn't win a single game in Provo. BYU-Utah games at Cougar Stadium were like Christians being thrown to lions (or rather, pagans being thrown to cougars). That all changed when Ron McBride took over the Utah program. Despite the fact he isn't LDS, he understood that to compete against BYU he needed to recruit top LDS athletes and to do that he had to support the Church's missionary program. He changed the attitude, and it shows: In the twenty games siince McBride was hired in 1989, the rivalry has been dead-even: Both teams have won 10 games, and both have winning records on the other's home field. Urban Meyer recognized the benefit of having returned missionaries, and of course, Kyle Whittingham is the first LDS head coach at the U in almost 50 years. The upshot is the recent Utah team that spanked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl had something like 30-35 returned missionaries on it, more than even BYU had last season I believe. Amazing, considering you could count on one hand the number of RM's on the average Utah team some 25 years ago. I hate to say it, but unless the Utah football program returns to its Mormon-bashing ways and stops supporting missionaries BYU is never going to slap them around like they did in the glory days of the '80s. Now good Mormon athletes have another top-25 program that will support their goal to serve a mission, and they won't automatically go to BYU anymore. |

I have fun with the rivalry. I'm really surprised my car hasn't been destroyed in the parking lot at school during rivalry week though. Logan is a great place –– I met my wife there –– and I loved the school. But since the U gets the biggest share of higher ed funding from the state, it's considered to be the "top" institution. Whether or not it really is the best is up for debate, though. I've always thought of USU as the secular equivalent of BYU, because it has a much higher percentage of LDS students and has a more conservative atmosphere than the U. That, and practically half of my married student ward were transfers from Ricks who couldn't get into BYU.

Language skills, and Mormon work ethic... Plenty of that at BYU, for sure... But I am a SUU grad who was able to go the Fed LE route, and not have to go into debt, or use my mommy and daddies dime to do it... Something tells me that BYU won't be hurt by their absence. Don't insult my kids. That just makes you a dick. Ouch, bro. Yeah, they'll go wherever they want. I sat down with the coaches from BYU, and they offered me half tuition. Then I sat down with the coach from SUU... That is how I became an SUU alum... Just busting your chops, bro. I would be proud if my kids go to BYU. I'd be proud if they become street-sweepers as well, as long as they give whatever they do 110%. My brother, and my brother-in-law both graduated from the Marriott School of Business Management... I happen to have more job security, and make more money than both of them, but hey... I just happened to attend another B school in Utah named after another famous Mormon...
I am right about the MLM thing, and BYU being (in)famous for producing some (in)famous fraudsters, though... And there are a couple BYU grads in the pipeline right now to be seeing some club-Fed concrete for not following the code they promised to live at BYU... But BYU is a great school... But I am not weird to think that BYU is the only school for Mormons. And if you have a mommy and daddy who hold your hand and pay your way through life, it is probably a great school to go to... Oh, and to the OP... Have an awesome Mission!!! I have made a lot of mistakes, and looked back on a lot of things that I would have done differently... But every day on my mission I worked hard, and I can honestly say, I lived every day to be an instrument in His hands while in Australia... |

Infidels. The Lords *annointed* are SUU alum.... Yeah, the pharisees and sadducees go to BYU, their wanabees go to USU... ![]() Give me a break. BYU is legendary in the Business community, especially in regards to Accounting. It also happens to be one of the primary recruiting centers for the FBI and CIA. BYU has a great accounting program (I spent two years there as an acct. major before finishing at Weber). It's currently ranked 4th I believe. However, have you worked much in the business community outside of Utah, or the mormon corridor? Legendary is not an accurate description. As for Engineering?
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4188/is_20061212/ai_n16906750/ Not the first time BYU has come out in front in such competitions. http://www.cloud9rc.com/rcmicroflight/nov02/mav_cont.asp Also: http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=99 http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=97 http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=92 http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=82 http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=81 http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=72 http://me.byu.edu/about/releases.php?news_id=57 Yes, they have won some awards. So have students from a lot of other schools. How are they ranked in engineering? |

But I am a SUU grad who was able to go the Fed LE route, and not have to go into debt, or use my mommy and daddies dime to do it...[/span] Congrats. I put myself and my wife through school at BYU (took me some extra years at school as a result), and graduated with no school debt. So I have no idea why you think mommy and daddy's dime had anything to do with it. |

Just for the record, I know that a lot of MLM takes place in Utah, and much of it is centered in Utah County. The multilevel marketing/pyramid schemes disgust me and I wish they'd go elsewhere.
I guess that's the downside to having large numbers of bilingual people with better than average interpersonal skills. One of the paradoxes of Utah County is that wages are depressed while housing prices are inflated. |

My son starts at BYU in 3 weeks. Compared to other private universities, it's a STEAL. Let him know to study his arse off that first semester. They make it really hard to cut a lot of students out. That and HS was a complete breeze compared to BYU. ETA: Also, BYU is cheaper than the U (and it's a Private school!), and I've paid my way through school while supporting a family. No parents $ here. They cut me off the day I turned 18. |

Combined with his decent but less-than-stellar GPA (he's a bit of an underachiever) and he wouldn't have had a chance getting in. BYU-Idaho, OTOH, is much more lax. IIRC they accept ACTs down to 16, probably to provide a BYU experience for kids who couldn't make the cut at BYU. He ended up at Weber State for his freshman year, which is a great school because they focus on teaching instead of research. After his mission he might go to whichever BYU will have him. |

I did my Bachelor's at Weber. Great school. Much smaller class sizes and more personal attention from the professors than I received at BYU. Tell your son to finish at Weber. No reason to go anywhere else. |

It's close and relatively cheap, and comparing my experiences at Weber and USU I think they do a much better job of serving undergraduate students. |

Wow, that school rivalry actually sounds worse than the ASU UofA rivalry. I have been jumped by drunk wildcat fans while in the marching band. But at least we don't have a religious component! CollegeFootballNews.com has rated it as one of the "Most Underrated Rivalries" in America.
ETA: And to swing this thread back on to the original subject, Utah is quite a unique place. About 2/3 of the state's population belongs to the LDS Church but I'd say only about half of those people actually are active –– meaning they attend church regularly. The state is divided roughly equally between active LDS, "less-active LDS", and non-Mormons. There aren't exact divisions between the three, but in general that's how it shakes out. The UofU-BYU rivalry often is a focal point for these divisions. However, those groups aren't equally distributed throughout the state. Conservative, suburban areas like Utah (Provo) and Cache counties are heavily LDS, while the urban areas are less so. Salt Lake City and County are about 50/50 Mormon; the mayor of SLC is a liberal moonbat non-Mormon who would be right at home in New York or San Francisco. Coal mining areas such as Carbon County (Price) were settled by non-Mormon immigrants from Europe and Mexico, while the Ogden area is less Mormon because of its railroad history and nearby Hill AFB. Summit County and Park City are mostly non-Mormon because of the mining history and because of the huge influx of rich Californians and Easterners fleeing their Socialist Worker's Paradises over the past 30 years. The OP is going to run into alot of people who are basically non-Mormon but who were raised Mormon or who have Mormon ancestors. So even if the person never set foot in an LDS Church in his life, he's often going to know alot about the Church already. As others have mentioned, he's going to be quite busy because there are many people who wish to re-connect with their LDS heritage. |

I am of the LDS (Mormon) faith. I recieved my mission call to the Provo, Utah mission this morning. Just thought I'd give the news to the small portion of Arfcom that cares Congrats, and good luck. And keep in mind you'll see alot of people here who have a large red "U" on their car or house or t-shirt. That stands for "unbeliever". Nice people, but sorely misinformed about the truth. ![]() ![]()
So true!As a member of the BYU football team, that is definitely the truth. I hate Rice-Eccles Stadium. I will never go within five miles of there again....hahaha |

Congrats. I put myself and my wife through school at BYU (took me some extra years at school as a result), and graduated with no school debt. Yeah, just busting your chops. You are cool, man. When I graduated from college, I had a wife, a kid, owned two vehicles, had a down payment on a home, and had money in the bank. I don't think I could have done what I did anywhere else...Maybe I was just lucky, but I did not screw around, worked two jobs, and let scholarships pay for everything. A little bit of sacrifice and work will pay big dividends... But obviously, I am preaching to the choir. I don't know, perhaps I am jaded by my experience. My first intern was a BYU grad who (would be) graduating with a bachelors degree. She was married, and between her and her husband (who still had two years in school) had $55,000 in debt... To me, that is not a very successful start to life. You know I respect you, bro. |

So true!
