Perhaps the best option would be to give democrats the choice.
We don't trust them nor should we. Their word is worthless. Knowing they intended on getting rid of it and will when they have the opportunity, we ought give them the choice we either remove the filibuster and ram through everything we want while we can because we know they're going to do the same, or they can get on board and join together to make it a constitutional amendment protecting it forever. Otherwise any gentleman's agreement we make with them to keep it is going to be thrown out in the trash as soon as they get power. Ball is in their court, either work together to protect it for both parties or bend over. |

Eliminating it would come back to bite us, just as the democrats implementing the "nuclear option" to avoid the needed 60 votes on issues in the senate, came back to bite them during Trumps supreme court nominations.

Mitch the bitch is right on this one. You have to actually conserve things to be a conservative. National legislation should be hard to pass and should need agreement from a majority of the people’s representatives. As much as I’d like to break it off in the Dems, eliminating the filibuster would come back to bite us all in the ass when the other party inevitably takes control again.

No, the Senate did not initially have a way to vote on cloture, which is how the filibuster exists in the first place. Progressives like Woodrow Wilson are why it’s even possible to end the debate on a bill. I’m for getting rid of the 17th amendment and returning that power to the state legislatures, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. |

I think everyone learned not to fuck with certain things after Harry Reid fucked with it in regards to nominees and it bit them in the ass big time when Trump wound up using it to confirm three justices.

When Harry did that, there was a rather impassioned speech by some Republican senator warning him and the rest of the Dems that they would regret doing that. And they did, right after the next election. |

Of all live births in the United States during 2020-2022 (average), 51.5% were White. 20 years earlier in 2000-2001, the average for live births was 78.9% white. Look at the demographics of this election in particular, who voted for who and by what margins -- the only reason we were able to win this time was because 2020-2024 was the highwater mark of anti-male propaganda in the US; the constant demonization of men in all media essentially skewed the youth vote into voting for us...this time. But they'll revert back to their original default settings once the "hate the patriarchy" stuff dies out. THAT'S why you want to have safeguards like the filibuster, etc in place; because unless we can suddenly reverse 20 years of demographic change... |

This a pivotal moment in the history of this republic. If it’s needed to gain real lasting reforms so be it. If it is for bullshit pork then no. The filibuster has saved us from some real bullshit in the past.

I'm in favor of protecting it so that the Dems can't kill it the next time they are in power. I agree with what someone else said, laws should be hard to pass. |

It needs to remain. |

honestly, fuck them. Remove it. pass all our shit, then pass a law stating it can not be removed after we're done and before midterms.
This is, of course, just mental masturbation and will never happen. |

This thread continues to be a shocking example of why we lose even when we win.
Do you people legitimately think there'll be 60 votes when you have to get some from the "Trump is literally Hitler!" crowd? Voting reforms? Yeah right Immigration reform? We saw their idea of this already. Budget cuts? Impossible Cabinet Appointments? Not a single one. If Trump somehow magically had a bill to cure cancer, these fuckers would vote against it out of spite. |

Legislation should inherently be hard to pass. Lowering the vote threshold means more junk laws get passed. Higher thresholds = more debate, and more discussion and more balanced laws. It also makes knee jerk reaction laws harder to pass.
