I am looking for a model engine for my son who is 9.

I have found the Revell on line, but it has rather poor reviews.

The old classic kits on ebay are available, but I might run the risk of not having all the parts.

Anyone with any experience on this?

No experience with this, just saw it in a catalog. Seems to have good reviews but not many http://www.genuinehotrod.com/itemgroup/transparent-v8-engine-model-kit

I had a model similar to this. Worked well, went  together easy and helped me wrap my brain around the concept.

One of my nephews has that exact kit, and I helped him assemble it.

The parts are of good quality, and the kit itself is quite involved - and a blast to put together

Quality-wise, it is night and day superior to the Revell kits we had when we were kids.

Contact this guy. He may build you one. Be prepared for several years wait and lots of wallet hurt though!

You could build a model stirling engine.  Make it run off the heat differential from a candle.

Buy a old B&S and make a cutaway of it with him.

I was going to suggest that four cylinder, but you can also find hand cranked v8 stuff from revell

Otherwise I'd go steam powered

I might go with this one.

Also like another poster said, might go with a junkyard pull.  Knowing my son, he will want the engine to "do something"
