| For the last several weeks now the monitor after it goes blank from inactivity will usually not come back up again after you move the mouse. Sometimes turning the monitor off for a few minutes and turning it back on will work, sometimes you have to restart the computer for it to come up. The monitor is a flat screen LCD about six years old. I am running Win 7 64 bit. I have not had this problem until recently so I am assuming it is montior related and not PC or software. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

Assuming this is a desktop computer (not a laptop)-
Next time it does it, shine a flashlight directly at the monitor and look really carefully- if you can see the image still it means the backlight has gone out. This is the most common failure in an LCD monitor (aside from smashing it to pieces If the above is the case, just trash it, it'll be more to fix than replace. Next thing to look at is the graphics card in the computer- really the only way to test that is to plug in another monitor. Those are fairly cheap to replace ($50-$100 dollars for a basic non-gaming), and very easy to do yourself. If it is neither of these two, the monitor likely just has a bad component internally (blown/failing capacitor, likely)- in which case you're probably definitely better off replacing it. Repairs are usually more expensive than its worth on a monitor. -Michael Edit: I just re-read and saw its a 6-year-old monitor, so yea, you're probably right to assume it is the monitor failing. Try what I said above- if it is the monitor, just replace it for sure. New LCD monitor will only run you $100 or so for a decent 18-20" |

It probably has bad caps.
If you're handy with a soldering iron, or know someone who is, you can fix it for less than $10. I currently have two monitors that my work threw out and I fixed them for cheap by replacing a few caps on the power board. They are both seven or eight years old now. I've had them about two years so far without issues. eta: I have a 20" Acer and a 19" HP. You can probably turn the power settings off and just have the monitor be on all the time for a short term solution. |

6yrs? wow. try replacing the monitor. i deal with dead monitors every week. Typically get 3 yrs out of the dells, wont even discuss acer. Really? I have had really good luck with the Dell monitors. yep, keep several in stock for monday mornings, Just swap them out and trash em. On the other hand, we have some viewsonics that seem to live forever.
