Is a damn fine scotch for $30.  I am no scotch expert, but I would say that this stuff is equal to, if not slightly better than Johnny Walker black label.  If you are looking for a well priced blended scotch, give this stuff a try.

I saw it for the first time ever this weekend, and then yesterday a colleague of mine who is REALLY into whiskey told me that it's really good.

Saw it at the liquor store and thought why not try something different,  I was planning on just picking up some JW red.  I am glad I decided to be adventurous

It's actually a blended malt, so it's 100% barley unlike regular blended scotch like Johnny Walker which is only required to be something like 51% barley.

IMO for an extra $10-15 you can get something better, but it's not a bad scotch at all. It's SOOO much better than JW Black which is

ETA Turns out it's a blend of Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie

That's explains why I like it then.  Glenfiddich is one of my favorite single malts

I guess they could have named it monkey pecker but shoulder sounds better for grown men to sip on I guess.

seems like since I quit drinking they come up with all kinds of crazy shit.

It's actually a term coined from the shoulder condition that guys would get from stirring the barley in the scotch making process.

Age isn't everything.  High phenolic content,  extremely tight cuts from the stills, and intelligent use of wood make for an incredibly refined whisky, though massive in flavor with a bit of astringency and prickle around the edges, it coats the tongue like oily velvet, and woe be unto he who sips it before anything else he hopes to taste for the next 12 hours.

Only if you loudly proclaim that to be acceptable due to your reclamation intentions.

Also - for ~$25, the Ron Burgundy scotch was a decent bottle. You'd expect ass for novelty scotch but it really isn't all that bad.

On that topic, Marilyn Manson's Absinthe is very highly rated as well which I thought was interesting.

If you looove peat, you'll find it fascinating, if you don't looove peat, you'll find it horrible.  The barley that makes it is the most heavily peated ever used for Scotch.  Note the 258ppm on the tin.  That's the phenolic concentration.  Most peat monsters like Laphroaig and Ardbeg use barley smoked to around 40-50ppm peat phenols.  Did you catch the ABV?

Yeah I did. I like a good cask strength (A'bunadh). I ocassionally enjoy peat, but I have to be in the mood for it, which isn't often. Anything peatier than Talisker is not really my thing. Oban 14 for me is a very good very mildly peaty scotch.

OP you need to educate yourself about what a good Scotch is.  I would consider JW black akin to Jim Beam, certainly not top shelf stuff.

Beam is JW Red territory, IMO.
Black is Baker's or Woodford territory.

This handles water well.  A'bunadh is a bit too delicate as sherry-heavy Scotches can be.  Still good stuff though.  I still have some batch 49.

I never said JW black was top shelf, but it is however more money than Monkey Shoulder, and I think Monkey Shoulder is better than JW black.  I'm not a scotch snob by any stretch, I am totally happy sipping on JW red label, it was my go to affordable scotch.  But Monkey Shoulder will now be my go to scotch.  I occasionally splurge a bit and get something more high dollar, but I'm perfectly happy drinking $30 bottles as well.
