Is it just me, or do these things have the opposite of their advertised effect?

I drank a Java Monster yesterday morning to give myself a boost because I got very little sleep. I was fighting to stay awake all day.

Last night I got more sleep and woke up actually feeling somewhat more refreshed (though it was only 6 hours). I drank another Java Monster this morning, and now I can barely keep my eyes open. What is going on here?

I snagged about half a case of the 'low carb' version last month. I did enjoy the taste, and while I didn't really feel any energy boost, I definitely felt the crash after 3~4 hrs.

I've never tried any of the monster/etc bigass energy drinks, but the 5-hour energy shots I've tried twice - and within 30 minutes I was in bed asleep.

The only energy drink that works for me is Rockstar Zero Carb. They put enough caffeine in it to do the job.

You have to drink more.  It's the crash.

I grew up with the guy who brought Monster to the market.  He is currently president of the company.  Was at my house the last two years down in Arizona.  They deliver the stuff to my house from time to time.  I just give it away as I can't drink much of it anymore.  Stuff is like liquid crack when you drink a couple of the big cans.

Michael Savage's son brought that brand on the market.  About the same as Monster, just different flavor.  I used to drink some of that, also.

Two big cans at the beginning of an 8 hour shift and you're good to go.

I used to love the stuff. And yeah, it worked for me.

Then I noticed my heartbeat getting a little weird after I downed an orange-label or a yellow-label (my favorites). Then I quit.

I posted pictures of them delivering it to my house end of last year.  Year before they sent the Monster truck with Monster girls to my work.  I worked for the gov't.  Work was going to put me under investigation.

Mark came from the small town in Michigan I currently live in.  His family still lives here (the ones that aren't employed by Monster out in California. )  Most people in this town don't even know that he runs a company that made over 600 million last year.

Blue Monster (the lo-carb one).

All the other ones give me the worst gut rot after being on them for a few days.

The cumulative crash after using them for days/weeks at a time is worse then the daily one. As such, I try to reserve them for when it is crunch time on a project and I need to be running full tilt for 12-14 hours a day for weeks at a time.

Normally I just stick to coffee.

Most of them do, but there's a Lo Carb version that's like 10 calories. It's ok, but the Rockstar Zero Carb (blue can) and AMP Sugar Free are way tastier. The AMP is like watermelon.

They're not in my photobucket account anymore.  Monster girls don't look like Hawaiian Tropic or Hooters girls, believe me.

It was January anyway and they were bundled up.

Interesting fact:
Mountain Dew––12 oz. = 46g of sugar
Monster–– 16 oz. = 27g of sugar

I guess they affect different people in different ways.

I did a road trip to Indiana over a weekend.  When I started to get road tired I downed a 5 Hour and was literally good to go for the next five hours.  I did it on the way up and the way back.  Worked as advertised for me.

I've found a Monster gets me over the morning hump, so I can make it until lunch time without difficulty if I was out super late the night before, or lets me stay awake an extra ~4 hours after when I should be asleep (but at 2am-3am I crash hard and sleep until the dog's in a panic at 8-9am).

Be careful.  I used to drink the stuff daily, and did not use moderation in how much I consumed.  My health has been almost totally wrecked for the last 2 1/2 years as a direct result.  I quit drinking them long ago but am still recovering.  Be moderate if you drink them.

I've had good results drinking one 16 oz lo carb monster over a period of 2 or 3 hours.   if I drink one faster, I just get tired. Metering the dosage seems to give me a higher energy level for hours afterwards. It also mitigates the crash.

I poured some Redline concentrate from GNC in my coffee with out reading the directions on the bottle. For the next hour I was involuntarily shaking so bad my chair was squeaking. Hyperventilation, rapid heartbeat, and a sense of impending doom for the next 3 hours. I took about 6 times the recommended dose.

I see the industry as being the target for a big class-action suit in the future.

Kinda like cigarettes, everyone knew they were fucking people up but everyone played stupid, manufacturer and consumer alike.

I used to chase a serving of Ultimate Orange with a can of Red Bull.  Knowing what I know now I consider that damn near suicidal.

One guy I worked with was taken to the hospital with excessively high blood pressure after drinking two Rock Stars one night.

When Monster delivered around 10 cases to my worksite I was handing it out to everyone I worked with and stocked the refrigerators in the office.   Another guy who had never had any and didn't know what it was drank a few cans and had to go to the hospital because he thought he was having a heart attack.

I had some female complain to my supervisor that she thought I was on something because I would speed around getting all my work done for the night after downing a couple of cans.

Too much sugar and caffeine, ginseng and guarana content

I drive all day for a living and find that spreading out one Monster (M-80 FTW) over several hours keeps me alert, not wired, and also helps avoid the crash.

At anther job where I had designated time for lunch I would down half at 11 and the other half around 2 and I always felt great throughout the day.  Never crashed.

That is a side effect of caffeine, IIRC. I went to a cardiologist a few years ago and it was determined that I was drinking too much soda for my body to handle ( I was averaging about two cans a day, at 18years old). Cardiologist said it was very rare but it does happen sometimes to young, healthy guys.

I have a Monster once in a while, but if I have had one and a soda or two in a day or any recent duration of time I get chest pains and my heart might get offbeat for a while.

There's a reason there's a warning on the can.  I've exceeded it numerous times, mostly in the sandbox going on my 6th or 7th day of 12s with very little sleep in between shifts.  I downed four of them in about an hour one night.  I felt wierd as shit the rest of the night.  Had super enhanced hearing.  I was standing next to a generator listening to the crickets chirp.  It was almost like my ears were working seperately.  I could distinctly make out the difference of the deafening generator in the ear facing it and the crickets on the other side.  People started talking to me and it sounded like they were yelling.  Then the riot kicked off.  That was fun stuff.  Walking around like a zombie blasting Iraqi's.  I quit drinking energy drinks after that.  I've noticed tea is the best thing to keep me awake.  I don't crash, don't get tired, not overly energized, but I can't sleep at all after I drink a few glasses of tea.
