| How many job applications do you have to put in on average before you get a job? |
|
If you do it right, just one. It is all about networking and building contacts. it is pretty tough to land a gig these days blind, I think you need more than just a good resume. You need to talk to people where you want to work, having someone on the inside that will say something positive about you is priceless.
I work in IT and moved back to WA after the whole dot bomb thing. I could not pay someone to hire me, responded to every job posting on the web, did my research and cold called companies talking to people in th industry. Nothing. Even with my certifications and experience, there was nothing out there. I finally got a job as a checker in the grocery store for less than ten bucks an hour (so much for unions being high paying jobs). Pretty humbleing to go from 60K a year to 25K or so :-( Finally got a job as a contractor at a helpdesk and managed to springboard up to better things, but it took almost 7 years to get back to something approaching my previous income. Never give up! |
