We had a few people get laid off today. One guy has been there about 30 years and I know him pretty well, the other about 25 years. What pisses me off is, I know of a guy that should have been fired for some of the shit he pulls, but has been allowed to slide by management because , well he is an ass kisser. They had some lay off down state last week, I heard 6 people down there. I don't know how many total will be hit up here. It sucks, I hate the way business runs these days!! |

Metal casting company. We do a lot of Aerospace, Automotive and Military work. They have a couple plants here in NH and a couple in Mexico. We used to employ almost 600 people maybe 10 years ago. I'm betting it is closer to 130 or so now. Hecho en México es más barato, señor. Which sucks. Because there is NO quality control there. Look at Optima batteries, used to be the best, moved production to Mexico, now they are shit. Plus it doesn't help that Haggie Massan is hostile to any business but big box retail. Tax breaks for manufacturers? Of course not. |

Industry? Company? Division? Doesnt really matter. ALL companies are doing this. We were one of the most stable around in the area. (5 years ago). Now they let people go left and right, there is no such thing as "job security" anymore. Anyone that gets complacent in their job now is a fool. I tell everyone to save as much as they can, so if they get let go they might have a cushion til the next job comes around. |

Nowadays, it is usually the people making the most money or closest to retirement that get shown the door. Cost cutting. This is happening a lot, I know a guy that was 2 years from a pension that got the slip while newer guys that were making much less stayed. No matter your age never stop learning new skills and make continuing education lifelong. |

Molex had a big salaried layoff on Jan. 20, 2009 (BHO's inauguration). My job was eliminated at the plant level. A bunch of PhDs at our Chicago HQ were also cut.
When a company is looking at who to lay off, there seems to be a number of considerations. However, they are not trying to cut a certain amount of heads. They are targeting a certain amount of money. So, they can lay off fewer people with higher salaries to hit that $ goal. |

We are winding down the military and the manufacturing that goes with it. Another MH370 and the airlines will slow down. Interesting times ahead. Tell me about it,it's been that way for 6 years now.I used to work OT,now I'm almost part time in order to keep my job. |
|
there is nothing out there and way to many other people looking. and only getting worse.

I got laid off the second week in February, after 14 years. My department (mechanical engineering) had 24 people in it 7 years ago. They're down to 3 now. And it's not easy finding something new, either. |

A great product turned into crap by retards at the top. |

Wait until the employer with over 50 employees meets the Obummercare mandate. 28 hours a week for everybody. People will have to get a second job just to get 40 hours a week. If I was into doing a new start-up, I'd offer '2nd job placements' to similar employers so that they can 'share' qualified people. 20 hours at Company A and 20 hours at Company B...and neither Company exceeds the maximum hours which would mandate employer provided Obummercare. ![]() |

Sorry guys, keep trying to find work.
We are running on minimal crew and the quality shows it. They have hired almost double the production staff and the support staff has decreased. Use to be 8 engineers in the group now there are only 3 of us left and we have added several new product lines We are fighting fires these days, stomp here, go stomp over there never really solving any issues. I will be working 19 straight days before I get one off just so we can make dollars this quarter. |

Sorry to hear about the layoffs at your work. If you work for any company that already has a facility up and running in Mexico or China the writing is on the wall. Why in the world would any company want to stay in the US and be taxed and regulated to death when they can go to these 3rd world countries and do what they want and increase the bottom line over night. These so called “free trade” deals have destroyed the industrial base and slowly strangled the average working guy in this country. The powers that be have this country so screwed up I’m at a loss for words. |

My wife just got hit with the Obama Care idiocy at her work. She is a part time contractor for the school system and they started compliance early and she is losing at least day a week starting April. On top of that, there are all kinds of ridiculous rules about total hours worked and days off. It’s so confusing, it seems even the people running the program don’t fully understand it. It’s almost to the point between gas, wear on the car and the low pay, this job is not worth it anymore. These fools in DC are killing what is left of the job market with this insanity. Contrary to sunshine the Gov and the MSM keeps blowing up our asses, this entire economy has been a shit sandwich since 2007.

You just can't say that truth in here Haven't actually seen much of that today. I think all the "Poors are poors because they're lazy. Unemployed people are only unemployed because they're lazy" has been hogged up by a certain trolly libertarian goombah... |

I took a job one and a half years ago at a company and not long after I came aboard they were bought out. We were the new company's (now OUR company) competition and a few months later they chose to close our location. The plant manager who has been with the original, original, original company was in a position in the old corporate office. Right before the buyout he was moved to our plant to "help clean it up." He was screwed over by politicians within the company and sent here to go away which is a shame. 36 years and he's run this plant before as well as implementing a lot of the production equipment/procedures/data we use today and basically he pissed in an up-in-coming manager's Cheerios and was punished. He's a lot calmer than I would be. We're all done soon. |

The older guys who aren't quite old enough to retire get hit pretty hard. It's much tougher for an old timer to find another job. Therefore he has to start prematurely spending his nest egg before its time.
Bad mojo. I think the country is still in for some very hard times soon. You can talk about recovery all you want but the manufacturing jobs that left, did not return. End of story.

At least I am relatively young. It just sucks my last two jobs I was at less then a year due to down sizing and closing. |

You just can't say that truth in here People can get butt hurt all they want. I’m all for fair trade, but this one way check valve to China and Mexico has been killing the average schmuck in this country since the late 90s. Yep, all of this free trade crap has worked out great. We are a heading towards 20 trillion in debt, we have inflation getting worse every year and we have nearly half the population on one form of welfare or another. We are heading 120mph towards a currency devaluation or economic reset. But on a positive side, we do have cheap big screen TVs and smart phones to watch the carnage play out in real time HD. Just in my area, I have watched countless automobile, aerospace and other massive manufactures close and move to Mexico and China over the last 10 years. The only thing keeping us afloat locally is the Army base and cutbacks are starting to happen there too. The only bright side is Remington is opening a new plant here with about 1000 jobs. That’s great, but I would guess we have lost 5 times that many jobs around here in just the last year. Just last month, a local paper mill near here closed that hired almost 1500 people. I’m sick of seeing hard working folks lose their jobs due to all of this BS. We are the only 1st world country that does not protect its citizens from unfair trade. I’ve worked in Canada, Germany and the Netherlands over the years. You should see what you have to go thru to work in these countries. I’m not saying we should be following their model, but we are fools for letting this happen to us. We have tens of millions of our fellow citizens out of work, yet we still let companies with K-Street connections lobby (bribe) for millions of VISAs for low pay tech workers to come in from India and Pakistan. We have 30 million or more illegal aliens here lowering wages and abusing out social services and the US Gov supports them more than legal citizens. It’s a disgrace and if you are not mad, you should be, this is not capitalism or a free market, this is crony capitalism at its worst.

He is worried about the same thing be because of his management position. He busted his ass for 30 years to get where he is at, and it my be over in a couple months. |

After I left one of my former employers (I still know a lot of people who work there) decided to start doing annual layoffs every spring. Supposedly the lowest performers are supposed to be let go, but in practice what happens is it either comes down to politics (the wrong person doesn't like them) or dollars. Quite a few people who were there for decades, including some from the very beginning, have been let go because they're making too much money. Management would rather hire 3 noobs off the street for what they saved in salary. Of course those 3 noobs are usually clueless, and the customers that have spent years working with that person aren't exactly thrilled to suddenly have some kid as their consultant. Not to mention what happens to morale when every year you're wondering if this time it's your neck the axe is going to fall on. I am so glad I left that place. |
| I made it through a round of layoffs the first round. The company survived long enough to get bought out by a giant. It became clear things were migrating to other locations and I cut and run. The politicing in positions wasn't good either. I still have number of friends there and last I heard was a rather large department was down to 2 people. I just hope the folks with 25+ years can hang on for retirement. |

I used to work for Dana Corporation. They sent a truck axle line to Mexico to "cut costs". Two years later Paccar said send it back or they would give the business to America Axle. Those people were incapable of making a good part. Some of American Axle's production, driveshaft for sure, has moved to Mexico. I hate it that manufacturing jobs are being lost in this country. There is no excuse for it. All those workers may have to move elsewhere and go to work in a different field. Yes starting at the bottom all over. It sucks but there ARE jobs out there. They just may not be what you want to do or where you want to be. |
|
We must be getting soft these are just the manufacturing jobs Americans don't need or want and it can be done cheaper in areas with lower labor costs which reduces the cost to the American consumer. (sounds great, doesn't it) ?
Whats wrong the fair trade and Crony capitalism hit a little close to home ? Buy American, the job you save may be your own. |

I bought my first new car this year. I searched and researched to find what I wanted. I was set on the Ford Fusion. I really liked them. But found that only 20% is made in USA. Looked some more till I saw the Accord it had the 6speed MT that I wanted. Mostly the reason I chose it is because it is 80% Made in USA. The only others to come close was the Toyota and the Passat. I do believe the cruize is also a lot of US but couldn't buy a GM.. My company we try to buy as much USA made as possible. There are no more fan / blower motor companies that are USA made. Fasco is mostly south of the border.
OP Sorry to hear your job is in jeopardy. The place I get our casting done has been expanding rapidly because of all the other US plants shutting down. At least that is my assumption. And not good for competition They do a lot of big name parts. Its kind of neat to have stuff from my little company in with the big companies. I hope your job is spared. Good luck. |
