I need a new cell phone and am considering the Motorolla Razor.  Does anyone here have one?  Are they any good? How about reception?

I've got a Razor and the reception is great.  The stand by battery life is as good, or better than any other phone I've owned.  I got the blue tooth headset to go with too.  The headset is worth the $$.  The Razor phone is hardly worth the $499 I paid for it, but I've seen them for sale for much less now.  I'd say less then $300 would be a more fair asking price.  FYI, they don't sell insurance on this model.....you break it you're screwed.

I just got one. Its great. Nice and small and good reception. I got it with a new plan for $199 plus a $199 rebate so its free, except the catch is you have to wait a few months the mail the rebate in. I guess so people dont just cancle their plan and get the phone for free. In order to get the rebate you still need to be using their service after like 4 months and then I get my $199 back

they now sell for 299 no contract and 199 on a 2 YR..

but i guess it was over the limit < time wise > for a " member "

if a team member would look out my past threads it has some pics on it.. < dont know if they still work>

back to your topic..

I just got one a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it.  This is the best phone I have ever had.  Great reception, the microphone picks up very well (My last phone sucked sooooo bad... noone could hear me talk) the speakerphone works great, it's so slim it doesn't buldge your pockets out..........  My only complaint is it doesn't have a calender on it which I grew very acustomed to on my previous phone.

Oh yeah, the ringer is quite loud and there are several different "modes" of ringing (NOT ringtones, that's different).  I especially like the one where it vibrates for 2 rings, THEN starts ringing.  That allows you to hit the button and turn it off without annoying people.

Hope this helps.

Reception is only as good as your signal.. GSM isnt everywhere.. I believe there is a CDMA version on its way.. But beware.. Motorola field tests.. On customers...

The RAZR I used for a couple weeks recently had OUTSTANDING signal reception in comparison to a variety of phones I have tried.  As long as GSM coverage is available you'll do well.  Standby battery life isn't that super, but with that GIANT color screen there is a tradeoff I guess.  Sound quality on transmit and recieve were both very good and as mentioned I would recomment a bluetooth headset (IIRC it doesn't even support a plug in headset).  Keypad is easy to see and use with large fingers also.

The big keys and especially the BIG SCREEN are very nice.

ETA:  the RAZR has been out for several months, the newer ones should be updated and out of the "field testing" development stage.  I know the V551's have also been updated recently.

Let's see.  Pretty much all the recent GSM phones would drop calls at regular intervals unless power cycled every other day.  Same with garbled audio.  V551's had a host of problems not the least of which was a blank screen every time the flip was opened.  These and other problems cured months after release with firmware updates.

Not saying they don't make good products but I think they need some more "real" users before they hit the shelves with some of their phones.

Damn.... How do you guys use flip phones??? they are so small every time I use one I fear ill break it and they seem awkward to hold to your ear...

My Nokia 5165 I built like a tank.... I have dropped it a bunch and its held up great. I even left it outside for 3 days and had no problems. It is in desperate need for a new battery. Gets OK reception. Best part is it was free with the plan I got about 2.5 years ago. I'll probably end up replacing it with a nokia 5140... as that seems to be the next ultra durable phone.

I bought an unlocked one for about $400. The same place is now $365 or so. I wanted it this way so the carrier didn't remove all the nifty functionality from it (and put in their ugly branding). They will hide the advanced features, not include games, or nerf the bluetooth so it can only connect to headsets (and not pda's, computers, other phones). Mine came with leather case (which I don't use), USB cable and software, wired headset, and charger. My only small miff was the charger was european so they included an adapter with it. MMMMM Black:
www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?refer=froogle&id=1004033

I have uploaded MP3s and MIDs to it for ringtones. It plays video but it will not record video without a firmware hack. For that go here:
www.motox.us/

I haven't figured out what needs to be done to get video to the phone (lack of time on my part).

The phone will work with tmobile and cingular (which I use). It took me a little while to get the configuration how I liked. In particular I didn't like storing my phone numbers on the SIM card and it wouldn't allow you to select to use phone memory but backup to the SIM card. This might be avalible in a newer firmware. I also got the HS850 bluetooth headset. It has good range. I use it for handsfree and like a cordless phone (voice dialing!)
www.compuplus.com/i/AUDIO/Headphones/Motorola-HS850-Bluetooth-Headset-1003365921.html?sid=fd65j85dm8u5g23&mfr=Motorola&subcat=Bluetooth%20Headsets

Reception has been good. I actually played with the advanced settings and got it working better (with the expense of battery life when making calls). Too much stuff to list here! Hope it helps.

RAZR: Free after Rebate at Amazon with 2 year Cingular contract.

[#19]
I snagged a RAZR a couple months ago.

I love it.  I have always liked the flip phone form factor.  (I'm not very hard on my equipment... it's expensive, and I treat it as such) I love that I can slip it in my pocket and barely know it's there.  Hell, I've been up under my car working on it when someone called me, and I realized I left it in my pocket.

Sound quality is great, reception is great in all but a few places, voice dial works great.  The keypad takes a little getting used to, and would probably be a bit difficult for fat fingered people.  The screen needs to be wiped off a lot... it picks up prints and smears from your face pretty easily.  The speakerphone KICKS ASS.  The camera is pretty mediochre, but I don't use it much.

The only thing I really don't like about it is how it organizes contacts.  If you have a friend with three different phone numbers and an email address, you have 4 separate entries in your contacts.  I'd like something that keeps them organized by contact, and has all of their info in one listing.  Link voice dial and speed dial keys from within the contact.

Anyway, with the prices dropping, for a phone, you can't beat it (if you prefer a flip phone).

I went and handled one. I didn't find it very comfortable to hold in the "talking" position.

Yes I ran into that. To fix it you dont store any contacts to the SIM card, just to the phone. And then you tell it to view your phonebook by primary contact.

Foxxz: Tell me of this "unlocked" feature. Are you saying that if I bought a Razr directly from TMobile, they would have disabled some functions on it before selling it to me? What's their incentive there?

I know a bit about telecom, but not much about the wireless business. Thanks.

+1 on the blue tooth head set. I keep the phone in my pocket and use the headset while driving. I have voice tags on my frequent numbers and it works great. I was a die hard Nokia fan because of the long battery life. The Razor is close in this catagory and scores much higher for cool factor. I paid $199

I get the free ones that they offer or ask for refurbished model before I buy anything new.

Minutes are too expensive to be talking thru a gold phone.

most GSM phones are locked to a provider... ie you place a cingular chip in a tmobile phone ... most of the time you get " phone restricted "

some minor fuctions are lost such as " network selection " .. < towers it will pick and in what order..>   minor stuff that is usefull mainly to advanced users..

the firmware  is what disables stuff  again.. mostly advanced users...... mostly because if you mess with some the settings your phone stops working..  :)

"locking" can be easliy undone without ever touching the firmware..  most are simple codes you enter...   but most motos have to be unlocked by a cable..

if anyone knows of a way to unlock motos by imei... ill buy them a membership here.. < yeah i know i dont have one .. myself... >

you need to know how to unlock most nokia gsm phones   im me

Locking will cause the phone to only work with that provider. Also, yanking the features out so you have to pay to get them back. Such as yanking boothtooth's ability to connect to computers. You will either have to buy the data cable from them, or use their cell network to get ringers and wallpapers and get your picturtes to and from the phone which costs money.
