[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Moving Across Country (Page 1 of 2)

So, I have an opportunity for work in Colorado that I am looking to pursue. I am however having issue with moving away from everything I know. I understand that sometimes you have to take risks to be successful but I like to hedge my bets when it comes to risk. How much would you say it would be to move from East TN to Denver area. 1 person not a lot of furniture. I can live in a 1 bedroom apt if I had to with the stuff I have. 1 car (landcruiser 16mpg highway). I will be leaving a job paying 30k to move to one paying 42-45k. I just want the hives opinion on doing such things. I will be leaving behind everything I have in way of support system and my girlfriend. She is not happy about it and says it will be over if I move.
What does the hive think would be the wisest decision? And how much would it cost to move that far? |
| I have lived and moved all over the country. Think about what you really need to move, maybe a TV, clothes and guns. Buy the rest when you get there a piece at a time, a bed, chest of drawers, small table and a chair or two. you can buy most at a garage sale. Sleep on an air matteress for a week, at your new place, until you get your bed. A Uhaul will cost you as much as your current stuff is probably worth. As far as the girlfriend, well there is no guarantee when it comes to woman, you pass on this job and two months later you find her shagging the pool boy or something like that. Go for it when you are young and carefree or you will regret it when you are older. |

I think daring a move to an unfamiliar area at your age is a great idea; especially with potential finincial gain. As far as the relationship? I'm not one to take advice from, but life is odd and many things can happen.
Warning : A trip or move to CO can become permanent. Denver is a city with opportunities. The geography and topography of CO offer many recreational options. Good luck. -JC |

So you have already checked the price and logistics of the move and that isn't why you posted... It's all about the female.... She's fine btw... So explain why she ain't coming with you.. She is young...19. And in school. She transferred from UGA to UTK last year and doesn't want to move again. She is willing to move after she graduates but not now. So that is why she isn't willing to move. I respect that. My "stuff" is nice. Its solid oak and has been passed down from my mother to myself, for my bedroom suite. My living room stuff is also nice, new and was expensive so I don't want to just throw it away....might list it on craigslist....I can easily get down to just the dresser and bed and lose the chest of drawers. But the main thing is the moving away from friends. I have a couple who are "willing" to move if I go just because they love the area also but I am not putting a ton of faith in that. I am young (25) and I feel stuck in a rut in my current location/position. I work for a small mom'pop shop and am basically at the top of my game here. Making 10k less than average pay for my position. Quoted:

I'd say this guy has pretty well summed it up. Assuming yours is a committed relationship and unless there are children or serious family needs - invalid parents, for example - or she has a successful career that ties her in place, then it's time for her to do some of that stand-by-your-man shit. If not, well, the women in Colorado have vaginas too. Jane |

If you're moving just for the $$ come on up here we're getting read to hire another hundred people , other wise take just what will fit in a small uhaul trailer it's about 3.5 tanks of gas
GF is a hard call if she is the ONE . I passed up moving back home to the PNW a few years back because of the wife so kinda stuck here till retirement but when that day comes I'm gone with or with out her |

Don't you have a thread about possibly joining the military?
I suggest you move. If she says it's over if you do, it was gonna be over sooner or later anyway. She's 19, c'mon, we know how dependable those girls are. You only get one chance to live your life, you just as well get to doing it. |

That is how wore out I am in my location. Looking for anything else that will allow me to be "excited" about work. |

I moved from San Diego to NoVA last year. I sold everything I could sell, gave away more, and threw out the rest. I drove. It was cheaper to do that than to pay thousands to move my nothing-special furniture and TV. When I got here, I bought a new TV and bed. As for the GF, she's telling you something. You're going to be better off without her. |

Buy an enclosed trailer locally, maybe $1k-$2k. Sell trailer after move.
Girlfriend is a tough call. Would you follow her? I'd say this is a decision you include your wife's input on, not a GF. Reminds me of a poem: If you love someone Set them free If they truly loved you They'd pack their shit and stalk you. Besides, this is where she'll get the "I gave up everything and moved for you" argument for later. Go for it! What type of job if I may ask? ETA Answered above. |

I was also wondering about this. The cost of living is pretty low in Tennessee; Colorado, probably not so much. I don't have the figures, but I'm betting it'll be a lateral move. Now, if you're doing this just for the change/adventure and the possibilities for advancement, well then, I believe Jane is right. It'll be much easier to do this now when you're young than once you're older and have some real roots laid down like a wife, kids, a bowling team, etc. |

I moved from St. Louis to Phoenix. A Uhaul was going to be like $1200 for the cheapest one. Even a pup trailer was like $300 or some shit. Instead, I just loaded all I could load in my Ranger and drove it down in one shot. I went to IKEA after a couple of weeks of sleeping on an air mattress and bought a bed/frame. The generosity of a fellow member got me a couch and a table/chairs. Financially and emotionally, it wasn't the easiest thing to do, but I don't regret it. If you want to do it, do it. There's a shit load of Arfcommers out there that would help you out if you need it, and if you're not a total social retard asshole, meeting new people and making new friends shouldn't be hard. I kinda liked not knowing anybody. It's like being reborn or something.
|
|
I slept in the truck. All my worldly shit was in the bed of a Ford Ranger and it was just covered with a tarp. Not to mention the eight guns I took, and a $1600 bicycle in the cab. I slept maybe an hour or two at a Flying J in New Mexico, and maybe another hour in a parking lot outside Albuquerque. Both times in the front seat coiled up like a retard with scoliosis. After waking up at about 2:30, I just decided that I was gonna go till I finished. And I did. I took food with me, and I think I filled it up four times on the road.

My first move was Maine to Florida , my second was FL to Michigan , then MI to Oklahoma , and finally OK back to New England .
All in all I have ZERO regrets . I think everyone should see the country , it's a great experience for the heart and the soul . . . . not to mention the fun you'll have in a different area of the country
Take about twice the money you'll think you need , dont bother moving anything that is easily replaceable , sell it here and shop at yard sales and Goodwills there . Concentrate on guns , tools, and personal belongings that you can fit in your Toyota . I had so many guns and tools in the last few cross-country moves that I had to have a trailer , but I just bought one that I later sold in my new home state . Best of luck to your new adventure !!! |

I know 45k isn't great but its a start/foot in the door. |

I did it 19 yrs ago. Still here in CO. It is great out here. We did not know anyone out here. I had just got married, 3 months, and we decided we wanted a change, and just moved. But like someone mentioned previously, 45k in CO is like 30k in TN. So don't really think about it as a raise, it will not be. I came from Louisiana. So, that is kinda like TN. The cost of living out here in Denver is outrageous. It just makes no sense.
Something else to consider, now that we have kids, and both of our the families etc.are back In LA, we are starting to think about going back. I telecommute so I can do my job anywhere. I would say go for it, but bring the girl with you. It will be a great adventure for the both of you. School will be ending in a few months and bring her out over the summer. Do it for the adventure, not the pay. |

You need info from the local CO crowd on cost of living in the area your new job is. You might see that 'increase' flat go away by the time you pay for an overpriced apartment in a "hot" area. Me personally, at 25, I'd go. You U-Haul your most important possessions out there, have a solid job offer, try living somewhere else and see where it takes you. Let the female thing work itself out. Maybe you both stay in touch, she graduates, moves out. Maybe not. Don't look back bro, you'll be 50+ and tied down before you know it.

CoL really isn't that bad per a couple of CoL calculators.
FTR, wife and I are moving to the same area this summer hopefully. I don't know where you live in TN, but a $30,000 salary in Knoxville is equivalent to a $34,000 salary in Denver. $30,000 in Chattanooga, TN = $33,951 in Denver $30,000 in Johnson, TN = $35,674 in Denver etc. http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html |
|
Quoted:
That is a cool comparison site. Not sure I would agree with it completely. The cost of living is so high in Denver that I get an income adjustment in my salary because I live in Denver vs. living elsewhere in the country that my company has branches in.. I don't live in Denver (yet), but I visit as often as possible and have family there. I'd say, at least comparing my area to Denver, it's pretty spot on. ETA: My cousin agrees. She moved from my current location to Denver and says the calc is pretty spot on. YMMV |
|
Go! It could be a mistake, but one you can easily recover from. It could also be an entry into a fantastic new career and life. You're young, WTF! I did NOT leave, instead making my bed very close to where I grew up. While this worked out well for me for the most part, I do feel I have missed out such 'new adventures'. You only live once. |

I moved from FL to Colorado.
Luckily I had a Ford F250 Diesel, so I bought a 30' enclosed car trailer used for $3500, and used it to move out here. Ended up needing to make 2 trips, but it cost me about $900 each way for fuel at 11mpg pulling the trailer. I just sold the trailer for $4000, so minus the fuel, I made money on it. If you don't have a truck capable of pulling a decent trailer, I'd rent a box truck from either Penske or Budget - get a diesel. And perhaps pull a trailer behind it with either your vehicle, or more stuff. Welcome to Colorado. I looked at east TN before deciding on CO. I think you'll like it here. |
|
Yes you should probably do it.
A number of years ago when I was 24 I packed up from N.Alabama and drove all my junk down to Clearwater, FL. Hell I didn't even have a job lined up and I only had $600 to my name. That move worked out very well for me and got me into an industry that's supported me ever since (and I had no clue about it until I made the move). I wouldn't necessarily believe the COL sites either because they're based on various averages and buying habits that may not represent you. When we moved up to Memphis about 2 yrs ago and everyone said how "cheap" it was going to be, well that wasn't entirely correct. In fact, just about the only thing that's even slightly cheaper is the price of housing and gas (about 10 cents/gal). A lot of other things are more expensive or a total wash, it really depends on what you buy. I'd find it hard to believe that you can't live the same quality of life on a 40% greater income. That the g/f is putting down an ultimatum is called a "warning sign", take it for what it's worth. I'm sure she's aware that they've got colleges in Colorado too. All that being said.....YOUR biggest advantage is that you don't have children or a house, or invalid relatives, or.......whatever. All these things make leaving a support system EXTREMELY difficult... I was burned out in my job in FL about 2 years ago and took an internal move to TN and that worked out well until about a month ago. So now I may have to move again (and believe it sucks MUCH harder when you're carrying around 15 years worth of your families accumulated possessions!)
If I was you I would do it. America is a large and beautiful country, it seems a shame to not experience all of it. Good luck and Godspeed. |
