Simple question - I purchased some import CD's a while ago that I really enjoy, but they've become scratched and damaged over time and it's at the point that they're skipping/popping etc.  I know that you're allowed to copy a CD you own for your own personal usage once you buy it, but what about in reverse?  Am I ok in downloading a CD I already own?  Thanks guys.

nope, not if you plan on downloading it from an illegal source

Sort of.

If the software requires sharing, you could be absolutely screwed.

I've had success with many CDs and DVDs that I couldn't repair myself using: azuradisc.com/site/index.html

Does it really?

Indrid_Cold: See if your local library has the CDs that you do in their collection .

If so, borrow a copy, and burn a replacement copy for a disc you already own.

Whats the difference between burning a backup from a copy you own, or burning a copy of a disk you own from a different source, provided you own an original?

Just my suggestion.  I can't see how it'd be that big of a brouhaha.

ETA: I just noticed the word 'imported'.

Sorry for the waste of bandwidth.

What are the copyright laws in the imported country?

Some good suggestions here, but alas I think I'm SOL.  First off, the damage isn't to the read-side of the disk... it's on the other side, and scratched through to the disk layers themselves (long story short - sand got in the CD sleeves and did some serious damage).  Second, I can almost guarantee that no library has these CD's, as I had to special order them from Japan years ago...

Checking the copyright laws in Japan is a good idea though... Hmmm...
