First off, I am very old-fashioned regarding my music.  I don't download music at all (never have), but I do like to compile CDs on occasion for myself and/or my father from our extensive collections on bought media of all descriptions (I have migrated it all to CD over the years).

For years I used a program called MusicMatch Jukebox to "rip" songs from my personal CDs for compilation, and that little program served me very well.  Years ago I paid for the "lifetime upgrade and support" option -- IIRC, it was a small, token fee.

As you probably know, that program was sold to Yahoo and is now Yahoo Jukebox, complete with monthly fees, etc. and geared more toward downloading music.

What I would like is a free or one-time-cost program to "rip" (if that is even the right term) songs from my personal CDs and compile/burn them to CDs for my own personal use.  I am not interested in download or sharing capabilities at all and would much prefer something stand-alone for my purposes.

I don't do much with my music (heck, I listen to talk radio more than anything else) and I haven't kept up with all of this (I know this is very basic stuff to some of you), but I do want the capability to be there when I want it, without paying monthly for all of the bells and whistles for the iPod crowd (dang, I'm making myself sound so old! ).

Any suggestions?

Doesn't Windows Media Player do basic ripping and burning?

As much as I hate Apple fanatics, iTunes is the best music management software available.  It can rip music in a variety of formats, easily burn CDs, and is probably the easiest program to use.

Hell, my gf can use it...

If all you care to do is make mix CD's then Windows Media Player will suit your needs.  Rip the discs into WMA format and from there you can make all the mix CD's you ever want.

Can do all you want. I would not rip to MP3 or WMA, but to WAV, for best sound.

I was completely unaware that it had those capabilities!

I'll try that first, before looking at outside programs.  It will probably do what little I need it to do.

For ripping I generally use CDEx or EAC (Exact AUdio Copy), both free.  Audacity or AudioGrabber (both also free) may also do MP3 rips, but although I like the programs I haven't tried to  use them for that.

flac- free lossless audio codec.

if you use linux- soundjuicer.  Throw away the CD (cause you now have exact audio duplicate of CD on your hard drive) and then convert to mp3.

If using windows...not sure which program does flac.  I havent researched it.

Used it over the weekend and it did fine for my (low-tech) needs/purposes.

Thanks again, everyone, for the suggestions!

People just like to seem like high-speed operators.

I get everything I need done with free software except for Windows itself and my anti-virus.
