Someone put a gun to your head and made you type 'muslim-american?'

Go for a walk. It might help.

These semantic discussions are a distraction, and they are silly.
We've been calling each other and ourselves "Irish-American", "Jewish-Americans", "Catholic-Americans" etc..
...forever.  No big deal.

THAT, and when I googled "Irish-America", this awesome poster popped up.

OP, what about people who say "I'm Irish/Italian/Polish/Hungarian/German/Swedish" and don't even bother to fucking hyphenate it?

Do they get a free pass because they are white?

IMHO if someone says "I'm african american" they are being more patriotic than the above people who still self identify with the country that their great grandparents left.

I don't think it's the same thing.

Are they walking around saying they are Irish-American? Probably not. Simply by saying "I'm Irish" or whatever ethnicity they are, they are proclaiming their lineage...not race.

African-Americans, on the other hand, use the phrase to designate their race.
