Only 4000?  That seems low.

My 268 comp cams that I had in a 360 years ago was good to 5500-ish and that was with the factory exhaust, carb and a Offy 360 dual port.  That was not a wild cam by any means but it sure was a responsive street cam without a lot of noticeable lope.

You can swap the cam out in an afternoon if you think you need a change.

I spent the morning cleaning out the oil galleries and cleaning all the crap from the machine work out of the nooks and crannies.

Hoping to start the build next weekend.

Very cool thread.  I didn't read every post yet but I want to go back and do that.  It's really nice to see such love and attention put into an old AMX.

My Great Grandpa retired from AMC.  He was a tool and die maker supposedly in the "Experimental Division" of AMC.  But he retired in 1965.  He probably did not work on the AMX.

I don't remember what all AMC cars he had but one time my Dad had to borrow one of his cars for a it and it was an "Ambassador".  I believe it was a V-8 sedan that had a good rumble to it.  I think he had a Concord at the end of his life too.  I remember my Uncle had one of those too.  I think you could get them in 4 WD.  LOL.

Oh yeah, we had a Gremlin when I was a baby.  I don't remember riding in it though.  But supposedly we took a trip to California in it.  My Dad had some training to do out there.  Those were the days.  No A/C, through the desert.  5 people.  Mom, Dad, Sister who was 2 and me and my teenage Cousin who was helping my Mom with us.   I can't even imagine how grueling that trip must have been.  LOL.

Both your AMX and Javelin are beautiful.  Great job.  I hope the engine purrs once you get it back together with no further problems.  I love that color.

All your cars look really nice.  Thank you for taking the time to share all this with us.

Today was supposed to be assembly day for the 401. I got up early and loaded everything up and headed to my buddies shop. He builds 7 second race engines and offered to assist me in the assembly. It started off pretty good. On two separate occasions small items for the bore gauge were dropped and readily found. I made a flip comment about how normally we would never fine the small items once dropped and things went down hill from there.

I open the box that has my bearings and valve train parts in notice that the push rod packaging is marked 7.8". I can see through the packaging and the push rods are marked 7.9". That .100 is not going to allow my valves to close. No big deal as we can still assemble things since I have some stock push rods that are the correct length and it will be an easy swap when the correct push rods arrive. Next we start prepping the mains so we can put the bearings in and install the crank. We install the #1 main bearing and torque the cap so we can double check the crank journal to bearing clearance. Everything  mics good. We move to #2 and again it mics good. We move to #3 which also doubles as the crank thrust bearing. I notice that both bearing halves appear to be top bearings and neither bearing has an anti-rotation tab. Initially we are thinking that the shop that provided the bearings made some sort of error. I try to call the shop but they are closed. Next I call another AMC buddy and I learn that Clevite (the bearing manufacture) has decided that AMC thrust bearings no longer need the anti rotation tabs. We are told it's okay to use the bearing as there is very little chance that the bearing will spin. Well fuck them and the GD horse they rode in on. It's too fucking hard to find a replacement 401 crank that is serviceable to chance using the bearing. If you do find a serviceable crank they tend to be north of 1K. I'm not installing a non tabbed bearing! I had to order a set of King bearings as they still have the anti-rotation tab.

We didn't get the crank installed but we got all the ring gaps checked along with the remaining bearing to journal clearances verified. I should have the new bearings and push rods Tuesday. Hopefully we can get thing together next weekend.

I believe LA had a bunch of those.  Adam 12 used them on their TV shows too.  Not sure if any are still kicking around out there among the civilian population.
I had a 78 Matador 360 V-8 former FBI car for a while.  Stole the engine out of it for a Javelin.  The police / fleet versions had a better oil pan with better baffling.
AMC never made a big block.  All their last 2 generation v-8s  (290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401) were the same general small block outside casting.  Internals and heads were the main differences between them.

I had a Matador with a 304, bought it for a few hundred bucks at  GSA auction.

Also had a SST Javelin with a 401, from same auction, think we gave $500. In 78 or 79.

I was going to take pictures of the engine assembly but I forgot the camera.

Tried to install the cam and had a bit of resistance just before it was completely in. Measured the bearings and found that #3 seemed a bit wonky. Pulled The#3 cam bearing and found a rolled edge on the babbitting and deformation. I swear to god the idiot at the engine shop that hit my new truck with the fork lift is who installed the cam bearings. Fortunately I had another set of cam bearings. We popped the appropriate bearing in and were off to the races.  Next we installed the crank with a set of bearings that all had anti-rotation tabs. We finished up installing the rings in the pistons and slapped them all into the appropriate hole. I hope to finish with the heads and valve train over memorial day.

Yeah I was gonna bump it today but I'm a dumbass. Got some time to finish up the engine build. Installed the double roller timing chain, slapped on the heads and installed the valve train. Things look good and we go to turn things over by hand and move things a bit and everything comes to a stop. I back it off a bit and it stops again. We are looking things over and it appears that the #3 and #7 pistons are contacting the head depending upon which way the crank is rotated.  We pull the valve train and then the left head. To make a long story short I ordered a gasket set for a 304 block. Every gasket on these engines is interchangeable except for the head gaskets.

I ordered a set of 401 head gaskets so I hope to get things back together this next weekend. If that doesn't pan out assembly will have to wait until after the heart ablation I'm scheduled for.

Well my granddaughter went into labor today so my wife headed to Vegas to be there for the arrival of our first great grandson.

I had to come home from work to tend to Sally the three legged wonder dog. I arrived home to a new set of head gaskets for the 401 and the new Begrug liner for my GMC truck.

I got the heads on and the valve train in.

Got much of the stuff connected and installed. All I've left is the drive-line, some minor electrical and to put the hood, grill and bumper on. I did find that the master cylinder must have a porous casting and will need to be replaced. Additionally the Lokar kick down cable does not include the mounting hardware so I will have to order that.
