Cool!

Dare I suggest a folded blanket over the side of the truck rail to cushion & support the rifle?

He'll remember stuff like that for the rest of his life.

When I was around his age, my father took me out in the woods and let me shoot his M1 carbine at an old broken alarm clock.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  I'm 41.  Your boy will remember.

He does pretty well.  It was pretty windy, so he didn't hit as much as he used to, but he's getting there.  I told him he needs to be ringing the gong at 200 yds by November so he can go deer hunting with me. :)

He'll remember days like that long after he's forgot about his first girl friend, "'Ol Whatsername".

Good deal. How big is the gong?

What is he, about eight or so?

I've got my boys (6 and 9) shooting gongs at 350 with my AR.  I've started them on prone and they monopod that bitch.  They love it.  Their mom doesn't know if little boys should be shooting silhouettes, but she's over it.  I love nothing more than calling hits for those two.

He LOVES my M1 carbine!!  I need to go get more ammo for it and he will be shooting that at it as well.  So far in his young life, he has shot the following:

.22 lr   (Pistol and Rifle)
.22 super colibri (Pistol and Rifle)
.32 S&W
.380
.9mm
.45 ACP
.223/5.56mm
.30 carbine
.308
.44 Magnum  (Rifle)
7.62x39
12 Guage
.410 Guage (He recently got one)

He also LOVES his bow and arrow.  :P  I'm a happy papa.  I'm just glad his mama doesn't get upset with it, she encourages it as well.

It's a 10" Gong I picked up at Cabelas.  He will be 8 in November.  He can easily hit the end of a barrel at 100 yards, all day long.  I figured it was time to hone him down to a smaller target.  :P

Very nice.  I want to get a popup silhouette.  That would be sweet.  They get expensive though.

I learned how to shoot with the same setup in my uncles front yard with a beer can and a singleshot .22 that I still have in my safe from nearly 25 years ago.

Ill never forget stuff like that.

I cut mine out of 3/8" soft steel I bought from a guy that was selling off some old bridge forms.  It works great for .223/5.56 at distance.  The .308 puts a pretty good hole in it though.  They'll be able to shoot it thousands of times though, so it's worth it.

He has a setup in the front yard that has the 3 little hanging targets, each one smaller then the last that he shoots with the super colibri's in a single action pistol.  He LOVEs that.  I also have him practice his rifle with his bb gun on those targets.

Kewl, I haven't had that option available to me yet, so this is what I got.

Cabelas Magnum Gong

It has held up to the .44 Mag I was shooting at it today pretty well so far.

I don't know these guys and don't owe them anything.  I bought a set of armor from them and their targets are cheap as hell.
