His budget it $350.  He wants something with decent zoom, a decent sized display and good battery life.  He specifically does not want an SLR.  He likes my Rebel XTI but thinks it is too big.

Any suggestions?

Canon SD 700/800 IS. They both have image stabilization and are very small (but have good displays and decent battery life.)

+1  I am recommending an SD800 to my Dad.

You won't do better than this for $350!!  Got one on the way for my daughter.  Was $354, when I ordered it last week.

Go with kodak easyshare.  I've had 2 of them and they work great.

I'm very, very happy with my Canon elph.  Pick as many megapixels as your budget allow. I have a 6, but the 8s aren't much more.

Equal or better quality are the Sony digicams. They are more serious (manual mode, lots of features) but they are larger and more expensive.

Battery life on the Elph is awesome, but you have to plug it in to recharge it.

Kodak and Sony are both good, but they have their flaws. Sony's are generally the most expensive, and many of them use a proprietary memory card format (I think it's called Memory Stick) while nearly everyone else uses SD memory cards for pocket cameras. Kodak on the other hand makes good cameras, but the image quality is not on par with Canon.

How does the A570 compare to the 700 or 800?

If your brother gets a digital camera that has no provision for a decent external flash unit, he'll be really sorry.
