He has to write a 9 page paper for a high school English class and the topic he chose to write about is pro-gun / anti-gun control (I must have raised him right!). It’s an advanced English class that is actually considered a college course in his school.  He is looking for some good research material to help him support his argument. Some Internet material is OK, but he also needs to use printed references. If anyone has some good suggestions, please let me know. My son would greatly appreciate it.

have him look up the federalist papers.  writings of the the people who wrote the constitution, along with quotations of the forefathers, etc.  then after hs laid the obvious proof down that we were meant to have it he can use modern proof of why we should have it (harvard studies, DOJ studies, CDC studies, etc).  good luck to him

Get the book "The Federalist Papers".  Hit the JPFO website,  as well as other pro-2nd sites on the internet.  There are more than a few.

First point to make:  The definition of "militia" as of the time the 2nd was written.
Second point to make: It never mentions hunting.    So if it's not for hunting, what's it for?

Thanks for the replies. Which of the 85 Federalist papers would be a good one to start with?

If you IM me your e-mail or some other way of getting in contact with you, I can attach my speech I gave last week, that also includes my work cited page, and all my references.

Not for direct copying/cheating reasons, but maybe it will help him get an idea.

More Guns, Less Crime

He really should decide whether he is going to research the meaning and intent of the second, or the efficacy and legality of modern gun control.  They are really two separate issues, and to try to lump them all together can get overwhelming.

If he's going for the latter, he should read "Guns and Violence: The English Experience", if he's going for the former he should read "The Origins of an Anglo American right" by the same author. Both are extremely good books, and explode the myth that guns=crime. The English slant will also be useful for drawing on international comparisons.

The Militia Act of 1903 might be useful, as it actually defines what the federal militia is.

He didn't start the paper yet, but i believe he is leaning more towards an anti-gun control position instead of a paper about the second amendment.

I made this image a while back that charts the Brady grades vs. violent crime rate for each state to sort of distill and illustrate the fact that less guns = more crime. That might be something he wants to hit on.

ETA: That giant peak there on the left is Washington DC, which is particularly interesting considering the case going on against them at the moment.
