I was honored and privlidged to be at Cape Canaveral for the launch of STS-135 Atlantis, the very last Space Shuttle mission. One of the most thrilling experiences of my life, the word 'awesome' doesn't come close.
The sheer power of those things is mind boggling |

I'll likely be there too. I am thinking more of a loud kegger than a quiet, romantic getaway. Lots of Murica! Fuck yeah! Quoted:

I love how they worked the reference of a corvette engine into their poster. Long time history with NASA and the Chevrolet Corvette and all.. But, which Corvette engine?

I've always wondered why the nozzles don't melt. In that video it looked like there were two cones, separated by a space filled with cold liquid gas. Anybody know about this? Are they producing the 25 again? If not then the SLS program will be short lived if we actually launch stuff with it. Unlike the STS they won't be getting them back. |

The tubes are formed in a die. Round straight tubes that are tapered are put into the die, sealed up, then pressurized to force the tube to shape. Roughly a flattened oval up near the combustion chamber, and more hexagonal at the aft manifold. The braze furnace is something- giant vacuum chamber that both heat treats the metal and brazes the assembly. Gold based braze alloy. |

Pretty much. The fuel is piped through the cone to keep it cool. The actual nozzle is flat plate at the bottom of the motor up inside the cone. Are they producing the 25 again? If not then the SLS program will be short lived if we actually launch stuff with it. Unlike the STS they won't be getting them back. |

We'll invite the wives so long as they promise to behave themselves. Don't want mine ruining the zen moment where we try to decide if the SLS is climbing or whether it's pushing Florida into the Atlantic. ETA: My wife would actually be simultaneously awestruck and giggling like me I think. |

Some how, some where, some one had to make that H2 and Lox. They probably did it with an eye to the most efficient process possible or it may have been a byproduct of some other process, but you can damn well bet a lot of carbon was liberated to produce the fuel and oxidizer that make water. |
