A billion dollar blimp and it doesn't even have an auto deflate protection system built in. Nice.![]() http://www.defenseone.com/technology/2015/10/breaking-us-military-blimp-loose-over-pennsylvania-f-16s-scrambled/123218/ |

http://www.wfmz.com/news/defense-department-blimp-breaks-free-in-maryland-tracked-over-pennsylvania/36097120 A blimp associated with NORAD's surveillance of the east coast has become untethered from its mooring in Maryland and it's now flying somewhere over Pennsylvania, according to NORAD spokesman Lt. Joe Mavrocki. The airship broke free around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday and has approximately 6,700 feet of tether attached to it. Mavrocki said two F-16s scrambled from the New Jersey National Guard are tracking the unmanned blimp. |

""" the Air Force has scrambled two F-16s from the Atlantic City Air National Guard base to track the blimp, which officials say is holding at 16,000 feet. The blimp broke free at 12:20 eastern time. "NORAD officials are working closely with the FAA to ensure air traffic safety, as well as with our other interagency partners to address the safe recovery of the aerostat,” NORAD said in a statement""" |

Probably something cool, and expensive. |

Bring a shotgun in the cessna to poke holes in the blimp with shot, not a rifle projectile that will fly for miles with deadly for miles after shooting it. |

Its tail is already deflated. Looks like they already ahot it or it has a hole in it. Shes a commin down. |

That's going to make for some good UFO and anal probe stories from the locals tonight. Maybe a samsquanch too.

Helicopters will zap your ass if you touch them before they are on the ground. |

Do they have any means to control it remotely or does it just float wherever the wind takes it? They are anchored to the ground. I doubt they have any control. the control surfaces are probably just to keep it pointed into the wind so the radar and cameras can be aimed better. |

FLED ZEPPELIN: Jets chase unmanned aerostat Army blimp as it comes untethered from Maryland base Blimping ain't easy! U.S. Army aircraft comes untethered from Maryland base, drifts into Pennsylvania and takes out power in small town The 243-foot-long blimp is part of a $2.7 billion project by the Pentagon called the Joint Land-Attack Cruise Missile Elevated Netted Sensor System, or JLENS. It was intended as an elaborate warning system in case America is attacked by missiles or drones. But after that project started in late December, it was marred by a slew of sky-high failures. A Baltimore Sun investigation last month revealed the blimp proved incapable of handling bad weather, functioning reliably or even recognizing threatening aircrafts. The paper called it a prime example of what defense officials dismiss as a "zombie" program. The usless blimp stayed grounded and became nothing more than a running joke, so much so that someone set up a parody Twitter account in its honor. After word broke of the zombie blimp's flight, the account had a field day. "Peace out losers," @AberdeenBlimp tweeted. "Seriously, leave me alone. #LikeFloatingInTheRain" Just one day before the blimp's great escape, its contractor, Raytheon, posted a job ad for a "watch stander" to guard it. The person hired for this "temporary position of undetermined length" would be responsible for snow removal and "other site support duties" on the blimp's base. The unnamed blimp was part of a $2.7 billion Pentagon project to create a warning system for an aerial attack. But tests proved it to be dysfunctional. An FAQ Raytheon wrote about the blimp — or "aerostat," as the company calls it — includes the question, "Can the tether break?" "The chance of that happening is very small," it says. The company claimed the blimp could stay afloat for 30 days — one of several grand ambitions that later tests couldn't prove. |
