Just on Fox News...They said it will move to another AF base because a missile attack from China and Russia are slim.

Now.. will the Stargate have to move?

My guess is that the bean counters have decided that the facility is too expensive to maintain/upgrade. So they will just move and spend twice as much $.

Actually its the reason they are moving. Stargate Command needs a larger facility to handle the operation to push back the Ori assault. They also need to park F-302s underground.

The mountain ceased to be 'defensable' years ago...

The Sovs had multiple 25MT warheads targeted on the thing, and there were no illusions of it's survival in the case of actual nuclear war....

Most likely, maintanance, and size constraints are causing the move....

Along with the fact that the worst ICBM threat we face is the 20 to 25 missiles China currently has available... The possibility that a 'Taepodong 3' might threaten us in 5-10 years (when the Norks figure out how to build a rocket that doesn't explode on takeoff) is the next closest issue...

Although the staff will leave the mountain, they want to leave everything intact and able to come online in less than one hour.

They are also going to finish all the upgrades that started after 9/11 - most are not done yet.

I just looked out across the flightline from my window and it looks like it's still there.  I can't imagine NORAD leaving CMAS.

I worked at Ft. Carson for two years, in 72 and 73, building the new barracks for the coming all volunteer Army.I have been up behind the Norad facility, and rode up to the gate one day, never saw a soul. I worked with a old ironworker that built the saferooms in the Mountain, told us stories at break about it.I remember being in the shadow of around pickup time. I was told they could take a direct ICBM hit and live in it.

Probably can take a single direct hit, but multiple direct hits, now that's a problem.

That's just a cover story for a Foothold situation.

When they built NORAD, they discovered that the interior of the mountain has a huge crack in it that makes the mountain weaker than they originally estimated.  I think they were going for protection from a nearby hit back when accuracy wasn't as good as it is now.  A direct hit on Cheyenne with a big nuke and it's toast.  I'm sure Russia has more than a few nukes aimed at it just in case one missed or couldn't quite do the job.

This is how the west will self destruct.  No money to defend themselves but plenty of money to support people who leech off the rest of us.

So, in 10 years when China has more accurate missiles, would we be SOL?  Bean counters need to be left out of the decision making process altogether in these types of matters pertaining to defense.

The  Cheyenne Mountain Complex (CMC) was designed to be proof against the Soviet ICBM that we call the SS-6.  By the time the CMC was operational in 1966, it was vulnerable to newer Soviet ICBM's.

Nevertheless, it seem very stupid to move from a known hardened location to a know soft location, Peterson AFB.  This only makes sense if they actually believe their own propaganda about a real war with an oppenent state (e.g., Russia or China) being very unlikely.  This basing policy on supposed intentions and not capabilities is foolish and will come back to haunt us, pershaps soon.
7/28/2006 7:40:41 AM EDT
[#22]
Once the Soviets developed the large yeld missiles, with enough accuracy to actually hit the mountain, it became a very large waste of money.  Not to mention not being tactically sound having that much in a single location.  Better to have it spread out a bit more, and in cheaper locations.

From what we have been briefed, only a portion of the personnel/mission is moving to PAFB.  There will still be a .mil presence in the mountain after the move to Bldg #2 is completed in 14 to 18 months.

Because the MSM is the biggest threat to the security of the military right now!  They don't give a crap that they are supplying the enemy with critical information, because "they have a right to know."  I'm surprised they don't publish a list of pending operations in Iraq and Afghanistan with departure times, targets, etc.

Soviet ICBMs have never had the accuracy of USAF ICBMs.  The Soviets had to use 10x the amount of hardened concrete to line their missile silos because of the superior targeting we had on our missiles.  That also gave the advantage to us on the fact that we could use a smaller warhead yet would do the job better than a carpet bombing high yield device like the Soviets.

As Copied from some Nuclear survival Wacko site--NOT My Commentary"

Nuclear Weapon Target Map for Colorado (FEMA-196/September 1990)

Nuclear Weapon Target Map for Nebraska (FEMA-196/September 1990)

"DENSE PACK - Look at all those target sites. So close Together! It serves a purpose. It is missiles protecting missles, and this is how it is done. These are "hardened" sites. Meaning it takes a direct ground explosion to dig them out. An air burst will not do it. When you have a ground explosion it throws many tons of dust and sand up into the air. High into the air. This is what will later become fallout carried by the winds hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles away. But right over that site that has just been hit the sand and grit in the air is very thick for quite a while. Another high speed missile (ICBM) trying to come through it will have its skin torn off just like by sand blasting and it will be destroyed. So the other missile sites nearby are safe. On the other hand, because missiles take off much slower than the speeds they eventually reach, the missiles in the undamaged silos can still be launched and will pass through the dust cloud without be harmed. Neat, eh? See there is a purpose in putting so many in one place. Now the only way that you can dig them out is with what is called a slow walk. Hit a target. Move on further and hit another target where the dust from the first won't hurt you. Come back thirty or forty-five minutes later and hit a second target near where you hit the first, after the cloud has had time to blow away. A slow process. Some silos will already have launched and you will waste the shot. Others can still wait to launch later because you can only get one at a time. This could go on for days. Neat. The military missiles protecting missiles. But they don't protect you, because if you are downwind you will get the fallout. Fatal if you are not in a shelter. They call it Defense but it is only Destruction. Nothing here defends or protects you, if they are used."
