stopped in at walmart tonight, one thats a but out of my way, but i was in the neighborhood. i needed a quick ammo fix, so me and a friend strolled back to the ammo counter. they had boxes of UMC .223 for 4$ each. around here thats usually like 6.99 a box. i was happy about the cheaper ammo(we ended up buying all they had) but i noticed something else. they had a large selection of ammo. around here walmarts usually have bare minimum. a few types of .22, and standard huntihng rounds (.223, 22-250, 308, ect) this one had a full selection of magnum calibers in several brands. they even had some 300 weatherby mag and such. they carried a full selection of pistol ammo. everytihng from ball ammo to some wicked HP and otherwise fragmenting ammo. pistol cal shotshells and other oddballs were kept in stock also. i guess this is maybe arfcoms first pro walmart thread. before anyone jumps my case, i think most od walmarts stuff is shit, and i hate thier ammo policies, but i thought i would share this rare exception |

You have never been to an Alaskan Walmart huh? [:)] What ammo policies are you talking about? Our Walmarts sell all kinds of ammo, rifles, pistols, etc. K-mart too - but all I ever buy from them is Winchester Dynapoints (.22LR) because they are the sole distributor. Even saw a Colt Sporter at K-mart once... |

I almost forgot. The only thing that pyst me off was that at midnight or so when I bought it the clerk had to call the manager to do the transaction because of the store policy that after a certain hour they don't sell guns or ammo to protect the clerk from yahoos. Did I forget to mention that I am a policeman and was in uniform? Sometimes I just wonder about people. BTW , I got the same reaction from the electronics section one night because they won't allow elec. purchases after a certain hour for fear of shoplifting.Again , I was in uniform. Are all Wal-Marts this stupid??? |

LMAO! That reminds me of that check-card commercial when the famous actor needs ID to pay with a check. |

the Walmart where I'm at carries a large stock of ammo as well. I've been buying UMC 5.56 for that price for about 3 years now. It's the regular price for a 20 rnd box. Also, ours carries Win whitbox 40 rnd boxes of ball and varmint loads for about $8. Of course my favorite place to buy the really good quality ammo is in my local NAPA Auto Parts. I can also get spare parts for my SureFire tac light there as well. the guy stocks almost everything Aguila makes. I love the .22 SSS, woohoo, small towns rule. Eat my smoke big city dwellers. (give me a brake, I'm from Houston and moved up here in 99'). |
| I've heard all sorts of horror stories about Walmart and buying ammo. I usually dont buy ammo there, but the other day I needed to get some .32's for a range trip. I went in, asked the clerk for four boxes, she rang them up, and I left. No questions, no hassles, just like buying ammo anywhere else actually. So whats the big deal? They seemed well stocked and the prices were cheaper than most gun stores around here. Still more expensive than ordering by the case, but hey, they are there. |
| The Walmart down here carries almost any ammo you can think of along with--powder, bullets, primers, Rockchucker presses, dies--damn near everything you need. I think it all depends on your area. I'm in the sticks and it's a 25 minute drive, but it's the closest thing around. I love where I live and wouldn't want to change it. |

Quoted: Did I forget to mention that I am a policeman and was in uniform? Maybe a stupid rule, but I don't see that exempting you. I doubt they would make an exception if I showed up in my class A uniform. Eddie It's not that I'm asking for special service because of the uniform I wear anymore than you would in your class A's.It's just that you wouldn't think a policeman or soldier would go into Wal-Mart to rob the... Nevermind. My bad.Stranger things have happened. |

Quoted: Did I forget to mention that I am a policeman and was in uniform? Maybe a stupid rule, but I don't see that exempting you. I doubt they would make an exception if I showed up in my class A uniform. Eddie So what you're saying is that policy should be followed, no matter how stupid? How about some common sense every once in a while? [/hijack] That's my biggest beef with Walmart and most public schools--rather than actually using their brains, they fall back on policy, making life tough for everyone and making asses of themselves in the process. That whole "I'm just following orders" is exactly what got the Germans in trouble back in the early forties....you've got to THINK, people! Are people truly that stupid nowadays that they can't use judgement and descrimination to identify a serving, on-duty police officer as someone who is not a threat to the clerks at Walmart? Or is it just laziness, easier to blame policy and procedure than to use the four brain cells they have left?[/hijack] Okay, I'm done now. |

They are just trying to follow the silly rules that are put in place by employers (and leaders, elected officials, law enforcement) to insure a robot type following who can't/won't question authority. Big brother type stuff... fullclip |

My best Wal-Mart experience: Clerk: Can I help you? Me: Yes, I would like a box of 12g #7 1/2 game load Clerk: Hands me a box of 12g #5 bismith Me: No, the green box of #7 1/2 GAME load Clerk: Hands me a GREEN box 12g of 3 1/2 #6 turkey load Me: The GREEN BOX that has numbers such as 12 and 7 1/2 and some lettering that says GAME LOAD Clerk:"Oh!" hands me the correct box and asks if I need anything else Me: "Yes, 2 boxes of .40 S&W FMJ UMC" Clerk: "Is that like a .45, is that what like what you want?" Me: I turn around leave and go to the gun store 7 miles out of the way pay $2.50 more but no agrivation. Most of the time if I need ammo quick wally world is ok but I prefer going to the gun shop, talk some bull talk about shit and buy some ammo there. |
|
Quoted: Quoted: Odd that Wal-mart will ask you if the ammunition is for a handgun but they won't sell you a handgun. for those of us under 21... "its for my carbine" "that means its for a rifle" repete: Unless I'm in a rush, I always tell them its for a machene gun [}:D] echo6 |

So what you're saying is that policy should be followed, no matter how stupid? Nothing more stupid than having a policy that isn't followed. What I was saying is why would a cop uniform exempt him. When he walks in wally world to buy something, he's a customer, same as you or I; he's just dressed differently. How about some common sense every once in a while? Eddie |

I doubt they would make an exception if I showed up in my class A uniform. Eddie Does your class A uniform include a loaded sidearm? Recently a DEA agent was allowed to fly out of DFW with his duty weapon. He could carry the Beretta 9mm and extra mags, but he had to surrender his nail clippers. Rules are rules... |

My guess it didn't have all that much to do with off-hours procedure adherance than it appears. If the clerk needs a manager present to enter authorization into the sales terminal, there's little the clerk can do about it himself. IIRC, in a previous thread the sporting goods manager in each walmart decides what is stocked. I'm sure they have suggested stock items like the 10/22 or Marlini .30-30's, but if he puts .357 Sig ammo on the shelf and it dries up in less than a week, there will be more. I've heard of AR's being sold, and I've had one clerk show me their distributor's book, and I'm sure if they though soemthing would move right away, they'd stock it. |

The guy behind the counter at the Walmart I go to is an FFL. No problems like this. He even offered to invite me to his house to show me how to reload [:)] I haven't taken him up on it yet. |

I've ran into morons at regular gunshops. Like the one that tried to convince me 300 grain cast sized .454 would work just fine in my .45 ACP reloads. Another one told me about his .30'06 M1 carbine. Maybe they trained at wally world. Ya know, I would probably pay close attention to anyone buying ammo at odds hours. I'm a Fox Mulder fan; trust no one. Eddie |

Gosh, I did NOT mean to start all this.(Raises both hands in a peace sign and puts on Nixon face)I am NOT a troll. Are people truly that stupid nowadays that they can't use judgement and discrimination to identify a serving, on-duty police officer as someone who is not a threat to the clerks at Walmart? Or is it just laziness, easier to blame policy and procedure than to use the four brain cells they have left?[/hijack] Okay, I'm done now. That was my point.I am a frequent visitor of Wallyworld at night, because I work nights.I spend my lunchbreaks there debating on which DVD I am going to buy next. Most of the guys I work with are on a first name basis with the manager b/c we are there all the time arresting shoplifters, working wrecks, etc. I'm not saying all cops aren't thugs, because some certainly are.And if I weren't in uniform and tried to go buy some ammo and they said no, I could dig that, they don't know I'm not Joe Thug out to rob them.Same as if a soldier were in his class A's, to use an example.Would one think that a guy sworn to defend this great country with his life would come in uniform, stick out like a sore thumb, and shoplift or worse?I don't know any of you,and I don't know about the regions where you live, but my city is only 60K or so.Comparitively small to some of the rest of you,so we don't usually see that kinda thing. To change the subject in a way,I had an experience in a convinience store several years ago to the same effect.I was buying some skoal tobacco, and the clerk asked for ID.I was in uniform.I kinda chuckled , but the clerk was serious! She said, "Well , you gotta be 18 to buy snuff." So I said,"But you gotta be 21 to be a cop." Would they card George Dubya? I would hope not because we know he is of age and does not have the appearance of the everyday thug trying to shoplift or whatever. I do not desire special privledges because I am a cop. There are enough cops trying to "get over" that ruin it for the rest of the good ones. And yes, I think of myself as a good one.Don't even shoot defenseless dogs either.[;)] Sorry for the rant and getting people stirred, that was not my intent. |
| I'm one to say LEO's should not have any special treatment compared to an average joe BUT if I was a Wal-Mart employee and a LEO came in looking for something like defensive rounds for his duty weapon I would plead with the manager to make an exception in his case, now if the LEO wanted 100 rounds of birdshot I'd tell him to come see us in the morning. |

I've bought a variety of ammo at the local wally world and have never been asked what it is for. It alsways seems to be the same guy there, though, and he is a "friendly", so maybe he just disposes of the quesiton for me, I dunno. Just the other day, I picked up 4 hundred round boxes of Winchester 9mm for 10 bucks a box. |
