My friend just texted me, he made O-4. 
I am happy for him, my dad once told me that many careers end at O-3. Not making the next jump can mean "don't let the door hit you in the ass". I hope this means my friend has a bright future Especially in,light of a news report I heard that the pentagon is decimating the junior officer ranks. |

He's now in the odd "no respect zone." You have three kinds of officers inthe Navy, young studs, old fudds, an Lieutenant Commanders. 
He is now required to own a sword and Mess Dress (Blue and White) though, so he has that going for him.

Yeah, O-4 is typically staff officer hell, too senior for a company command, need to be an O-5 for a battalion command. Best hope is to get a battalion XO slot, but that's still managing the battalion staff... Oh, and schools, CGSC is a 44 week course... |

As for the uniform/sword, I don't think I've even worn something other than khaki or Smurf camo other than our summer/winter inspections in 5 years. USAF is asking O4 physicians to voluntarily leave in some specialties ... |

It's a scary thought with a family of four. |

The Navy seemed to use that more often back when I was in(retired AF myself but heard about it). What happens with promotions is you get a Line Number. You don't pin on the rank until your Line Number comes up. Line Numbers are spread out across the fiscal year to spread out the increased funding for higher ranks. Frocking is when an individual acutally pins on the rank but don't get the pay for it until the Line Number comes around later. So the individual get's to put the rank to use but not the benefits of the pay increase. |

It's mostly accurate, but they aren't commissioned officers, they're officers by warrant. But that's kind of a technicality that doesn't have much bearing on day-to-day life. If you're enlisted, you still salute them and call them "sir" and they get to live in officers' country. |

Thanks Thats his lineal number, tells when he puts the rank on. Frocking, at least in the Navy, is mostly an enlisted thing. Granted I've only been in 5 years, but never seen an officer frocked. |

Probably close to impossible. 3200 or so Navy Captains on active duty, how many does Annapolis graduate every year? Of course, I'm sure they're over-represented compared to other commissioning sources, but probably not by much. |
