Potentially. A far greater number than a president has had in years.

Trump has already appointed eight appellate judges, the most this early in a presidency since Richard M. Nixon, and on Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to send a ninth appellate nominee — Mr. Trump’s deputy White House counsel, Gregory Katsas — to the floor.

Trump started with 21 open appellate seats because after Republicans gained control of the Senate in 2015, they essentially shut down the confirmation process.
Six additional appellate judgeships have opened since his inauguration, and nearly half of the 150 active appeals court judges are eligible to take senior status — semiretirement that permits a successor’s appointment — or will soon reach that age, according to Russell Wheeler, a Brookings Institution scholar.

No, but the rule of 80, to make them eligible, means they are at least 65 with 15 years experience or 70 with 10 years, and so on.

Time vs the average lifespan of an American is not on their side if they want to enjoy any retirement at all.

Thanks I was coincidentally wondering about this today. Are we boned if there's no other SCOTUS nominations before 2018 elections should we get surprise losses?

This is why it's so important we keep the Rs controlling the Senate, even if that means we have some Rhinos/GOPe in place.

Hopefully we can get T a 2nd Term and things will be more bigly for another 4 years.

I fully expect Kennedy to retire next summer.

I still believe we stand to gain more states than we lose in the senate, next year.
@CarmelBytheSea This is the layout of the upcoming election. It would take a something profoundly catastrophic to blow gaining seats, in my opinion.
The house is a different matter entirely, however.

Current D seats of states Trump won entirely:
West Virginia, Trump won by 42 points
North Dakota, Trump won by 35 points
Montana, Trump won by 20.5 points
Missouri, Trump won by 19 points
Indiana, Trump won by 19 points
Ohio, Trump won by 8 points
Florida, Trump won by 1 point
Michigan, Trump won by .25 point
Pennsylvania, Trump won by .75 point
Wisconsin, Trump won by .75 point

Current R seats of states Trump lost:
Nevada, Trump lost by 2.5 points

Current R seats of states Trump won:
Wyoming, Trump won by 46 points
Tennessee, Trump won by 26 points
Nebraska, Trump won by 25 points
Mississippi, Trump won by 19 points
Utah, Trump won by 18 points
Texas, Trump won by 9 points
Arizona, Trump won by 3.5 points

Current D seats of states Trump lost:
Hawaii, Trump lost by 32 points
California, Trump lost by 30 points
Massachusetts, Trump lost by 28 points
Vermont, Trump lost by 26 points
Maryland, Trump lost by 26 points
New York, Trump lost by 21 points
Washington, Trump lost by 16 points
Rhode Island, Trump lost by 14 points

New Jersey, Trump lost by 13 points
Oregon, Trump lost by 11 points
Delaware, Trump lost by 11 points
New Mexico, Trump lost by 8 points

This, THIS is why I voted for Trump.  And why I would vote for any Republican senator in 2018.

With Trump we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to change the direction of the federal judiciary, and we need to take full advantage of it.

If you look at the graph you see that Bush came in with a similar opportunity to fill empty seats.  16% vacancy, we could have really tipped the courts in a conservative direction.

Instead, for his first round of judges he re-nominated the Clinton picks who didn't get confirmed as a "goodwill" gesture after the Florida recount.

And the Republican Establishment wonders why we supported Trump over Jeb!

Those four more years will be critical to see the full change we need in the judiciary.

Thanks, will screenshot and take some time to look over. Spent an hour listening to Larry Kudlow today and he had some Democrat economist on that hates Trump BUT everyone agreed the economy including wage growth was a net positive. Ben Shapiro shit on the idea last week but I think the evonomy will be help for the 2018 elections but I'm always wary cause a year in politics and things could theoretically change

People need to listen to Bannon. A bunch of chicken littles were ready to give up on Wednesday because dems won in dem states, and the media said it's over

tl;dw: It is going to be a fight every day. Need to press on. Enough folding like a good little republican, like the dems like.

I think it literally will be a fight everyday, the left hasn't run out of steam to fight and I imagine playing up those elections is an effort to rally their troops. They're in shit talk mode and claim Alabama next and then the world but Donna Brazille came to San Francisco last week and said the Dem party is in disarray so how can it not be all about posturing and putting on a show. Interestingly more and more socialist articles have been featured in "mainstream" news this week, I posted a couple last night

Just finished the video. I think the last few minutes were the best.
That is to say, we are not going to get that shining moment of victory after a win. People need to stop feeling defeated because of the relentless attacks and refusal of our enemies to concede their baseless lies, because we are making progress.
They are trying to demoralize us by diminishing the value of our victories and bolstering the value of our enemies victories. The other side will always make it ugly, and we need to keep the pressure on to take the country back.
We get so bogged down in arguing pettiness for political talking point attacks, we lose sight of things like what this thread is about. Bigger picture battles that matter, like controlling the courts that get final say on 60,000 cases a year, only 80 of which the SCOTUS might hear.
