I had a c5/c6 herniation from a choke hold during a martial arts class about 4 years ago. It's healed completely from what I can tell. I want to start working my neck but with the prior injury I'm not sure what is safe. I googled it and there's not much info on it. We have a 4 way neck machine at my gym but I haven't been using it. So far I've been doing static holds with my hand or a stretch band for resistance. Any reasons to not use the 4 way machine? |

I've used one of these for years...

I thought about bridges and weights. Just wondering if it's safe with a prior herniation. The last thing I need is to re injure that disc but I would think a strong neck should prevent injuries. When I went to the chiropractor he had me do various head movements to judge how bad I was. He said movement looks really good lets get an xray to see what is going on in there. After the xray he came back with an astonished look and said it doesn't look good I don't even know how you can function. He saw how ripped I was and said my only explanation is that your muscularity from working out has allowed you to overcome it. I don't know the technical terms or have the xray to show you, but I have a disk that appears to be completely destroyed. When looking from the side on the xray one of my vertebrae in my neck is sitting at a 45 degree angle with near bone to bone contact in the rear. I also have bone spurs and arthritis in my neck. It was an injury from mma training. I originally went to the doctor and he said it doesn't seem too bad. In fact he was so confident that it was nothing he wouldn't even give me an xray or an mri. He gave me some weak muscle relaxers because my neck was so stiff I could barely move it. He also gave me ibuprofen
That doctor visit was several years ago I didn't go to chiro until I gave up on trying to convince my doctor that it was more serious. He said he thought I was just trying to get pain pills. In my opinion that dr was a piece of shit. Now I have arthritis and get headaches a lot. My chiro told me to not stop working out and I don't believe I could function without maintaining the muscle strength in my neck. |

I'm going to keep doing static holds and work my way up to weights really slowly. |
