I am looking at getting back into shape. I got hurt pretty bad (perm nerve damage and pain 100% of the time) in my knee. It has taken me almost 2 years jsut to be able to walk without a limp and or unaided. I tried running and doing regular "Marine" stuff back during the summer, and was met with the reality that I probably won't ever be able to do that again after my knee gave out on me and the ensuing pain helped me taste lunch 2x's. I am currently 6'3" ~250 and want to get back down into the 200-220 range where I was happy.
I eat like crap b/c my wife is a good cook and cooks BIG (which is obviously how i got BIG). A normal breakfast consists of a banana, granola bar, 32oz of water, and that's about it. Lunch IF i have time consists of the same thing as Bfast + 32 oz more of water and normally a PBJ so i can eat on the run. Supper is what kills me along with minimal exercise...Consists of Lasagna (homemade), Chicken fetticuine, meatloaf, baked chicken....it really varies but those are the norm. Exercise...honestly since being hurt has been very minimal (walking, and light weight stuff). I am just scared of busting my knee again and something worse happen. So any help dropping the weight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys |

Losing weight is nearly all diet. Look at some of your favorite junk food item's calorie content and then look up how long walking or some other exercise will take to burn off those calories. WIthout personally knowing you I assume by the time supper comes around you are really hungry and overeat. Try eating more for breakfast and lunch to offset this if I am correct. If you are serious you probably need to talk to your wife about lower calorie suppers.
As for your knee, find someone that has dealt successfully with people like yourself. |

Pretty close, When supper comes around I definitely overeat. It's the only meal I actualy have sitting down anywhere on a normal day. I've already asked her about the lower cal meals and she said that she would look stuff up and try. What direction should we go with that?
Also having 2 kids on a diet the doctor describes as double everything doesn't help. My oldest will seriously eat a PLATE of spaghetti, 2 apples/banana 4-5 sweet rolls, and 2 glasses of milk and she is under 5 and underweight and she eats everything in my house lol. Are there any "low" impact exercises i could do? |

Your breakfast and lunch are killing you, too. Both are carb-heavy and high glycemic, with very little quality fat or protein. You're taking your pancreatic islet cells on a daily roller coaster ride! Not good. You might find success with the Zone diet. You get to eat many yummy things, but it helps you learn what foods to avoid and proper portioning. It's not 'extreme' at all so it's something you can do for a lifetime without feeling overly deprived. You sound like someone who could ease into eating Zone. Buy the book(s). But you need to get your wife on board. It's like when I tried to quit my daily session of anal fisting before breakfast. I tried for months to quit, but my wife always showed me her pretty, delicate, manicured hand in the morning, waving it seductively toward my filthy bits. It wasn't until I got her do stop doing that every morning that I was able to cut back to 2 or 3 weekly sessions of anal fisting before breakfast. It's not exactly what you're going through with your wife, but an enabler is an enabler. You two need to team up to some extent to make change happen. Maybe you could take the initative to find some healthier recipes for her. My wife is a great cook, too. She makes lots of healthy stuff in weekly portions so we can easily feed ourselves on the go. |

A lot of it is diet... but regular exercise can boost your metabolism so that you will burn more calories all the time, even at rest. |

Also...I'm no doctor, but I think you're doctor may be a little out of touch in regard to your kids. I understand the doc thinks the kids need more calories, but quality is quality, and high quantities of poor quality calories just can't be good, even for (especially for?) a kid. I know some kids seem like they are human garbage disposals and can eat anything, seemingly with no ill effect. But I just don't agree that it's the best decision. If you want them to eat X calories per day, that's fine, but doing it with loads of refined carbs and grains cannot be the healthiest way. Surly they will be healthier if they eat healthier, plus they will be learning invaluable eating habits from an early age.
I got into a discussion with my GI doc about diet earlier this year. I was a new patient, we were getting to know each other. I mentioned my hemorrhoid and he started blurting out how I need to eat more grains. He was a fast talker, and when I started to tell him how I ate he blurted out (his assumption) that I ate like a typical American, i.e. too much protein, too little fiber, etc. I told him that I am extremely conscious of how I eat and I know what I'm putting in me. I told him that I disagree with his recommendation of eating lots more whole grains. (I eat very, very little.) He was still on his high horse, when finally I stood up and took off my shirt and said, "Look at me! I'm 42 years old. I haven't always looked like this. I got this way with proper diet and exercise. I think your notions of healthy eating are narrow minded and antiquated!" We both laughed, but I think I got through to him. The following week he inserted a scope in my bum and gave me a clean bill of health, though he did find a broken fingernail, painted red. That was hard for me to explain. Anyhooooo....There is sooooo much ingrained bad information out there regarding proper nutrition, even doctors can be ignorant. |

Good God, sometimes threads go from 0 to WTF in about 1/10 of a second ![]() Ok...OP here's my advice that will shock no one that's a regular here: Exercise- tough because of your knee, but you should TRY (if possible) to strengthen it. That may mean some air squats...can you squat all the way down? If you can't I'd try to build that flexibility, SLOWLY and carefully. If that is truly not an option you could look into something like rowing or swimming. Diet- Your diet is KILLING you man. You're stuffing yourself with nothing but carbs in the morning. I know this sound counterintuitive but you need to eat some full fat WHOLE foods to keep you satisfied. Cut out ALL sugar. That lasagna? you're getting probably 2-4 days worth of carbs in that, and guess where that extra goes? Straight to the love handles...you're spiking your insulin multiple times a day which triggers your body to store fat. Try this: Cut out all sugar and processed foods. Eat meat and veggies at EVERY meal. Cut out all drinks but water, unsweetened tea or coffee. Breakfast: eggs and veggies (a few eggs scrambled with some broccoli is an amazing breakfast) Lunch: Any sort of meat, green veggies Dinner: Same as lunch It's that simple. Get used to no more pasta and bread for a few weeks, then start worrying about how much you're eating. In my experience fixing the quality of your food is more important and easier that fixing the quantity when we're talking about health. Once you get used to your new lifestyle, start cutting back portions until you are losing weight slowly. What I'm describing here is the very rough outline of the Paleo or Primal way of eating. It works. |
|
Clean up your diet. Don't eat any processed foods or anything with sugar or anything with artificial shit in it.
Eats lots of meat (preferably grass-fed beef, free range chicken, and fish), veggies, coconut and olive oil. If you still need more calories add some nuts and fruits. As for exercise, squat, deadlift, bench, and overhead press. Your knee may or may not preclude you from squatting and deadlifting, but a lot of folks who have screwed up knees are still able to do so. ETA: I forgot eggs until I read Roland's post. Eggs are good for you. I eat 6 every day for breakfast. |

Then walk with your wife around the neighborhood. For breakfast, drink 32oz water and finished off the leftover 2/3 supper. For lunch, just go with the water, granola bar and banana. Fastwalk on level surfaces as often as you can and continue with your Pushups, pull ups, sit ups, dips, etc. |

Exercise is difficult, but im not one to make many excuses for not trying. I tried some air squats last night and well I ended up in the floor more often than not. The flexabilty is somewhat there, but once i go past a certian point Pain level and tension on muscle goes from a 5 (what it stays at) to about a 8-9 on the pain scale. I would actually love to get into rowing. I had never thought about that...I bet my wife would enjoy that as well. Upper body is all good to work until exhaustion. It's just i've always run to lose weight and when that was taken away I quit caring . Out of curosity what are some other Core exercises that I can do?
Are there any healthy Italian dishes? My wife 50% Italian is ummm....a pasta fiend. If i have to hand make everything I don't care. Went shopping last night and had her get Chicken and potatoes, and my family grows greens so i've got butter beans by the 100lb lol (no joke though) was that somewhat better? I fully intend on gutting out kitchen of EVERYTHING if i need to. What is the best way to cut out sugars But still satisfy a sweet tooth? I am glad you left me with coffee though otherwise my life would begin to be a lot more difficult lol. Does it matter how the veggies are cooked. I can eat raw broccoli but cooked it feel like snot. I''ve been called a Neanderthal a bunch in my life...might as well eat like one huh lol. |

Going from carry full combat loads and extra stuff to little more thn my 35lb daughter is rough. I think i am going to load up on egg's and Chicken tonight. I really appreciate all the help guys. It really is humbling to go from 200-215lbs of lean death to a 250lb fatty all because I get depressed over an injury and didn't get help ![]()

Uncooked veggies are fine if that's what you prefer. You could also just very lightly saute them so they're still crunchy. I'm actually Italian too...pasta was hard to give up at first but I rarely crave it anymore. I still have it maybe once a month or less. You can make spaghetti sauce and put on spaghetti squash, it's not the same but it's a good enough substitute IMO. There's always things like chicken Parmesan too. Sweet tooth it tough...I have a terrible sweet tooth, I LOVE chocolate and ice cream. Every Saturday I eat both or either, before competition I cut that out too. During the week if I get a bad craving I'll have a few frozen blueberries and on rare occasion some 85% dark chocolate, but I try to not have any sugar outside of Saturday...the craving do go away after a while. Good luck!

yall are pretty awesome and evil. Reading all this food stuff im drooling lol.
Do yall have any good recipes i can get a hold of to make all this stuff? My two huge Vice's are Chocolate, Ice Cream, and Dr pepper....mix them and it's done. We don't really keep any sweets in the house other than pop tarts and granola bars. So i don't think it would be hard to cut that out. The processed foods are plenty though. I told the lady last night that we are going to start hand making everything we eat and she was pretty excited. I FREAKING LOVE chicken parm. It's all i eat when we got out to eat. I've made it a few times, but there is something always missing. |

Now, if you're trying to lose weight, 24oz of milk is really going to up your calories, hampering your weight loss. I'm not against milk, I'm not even against whole milk- but I'd cut it out until you reach your weight goal. |

Cutting out milk is going to be harder than getting a meth addict to go cold turkey. That is actually going to be the hardest thing about this diet. I could quit chocolate, sweets and processed junk cold turkey and be no skin off my back, but cutting milk out is going to be STUPID hard. I might have to do that kinda slow. Also I just got off the phone with another Marine and he said he is willing to help me shed the lbs and we're gonna start walking and stuff tomorrow morning and continue saturday mornings from here on out and as often as we can and my knee can handle it during the week. |

Now, if you want to cut that 400 cals from somewhere else then you'd be ok...but you'll probably be pretty hungry because 400 calories can also equal about 5-6 eggs, which is more satisfying? Also, while trying to lose weight I'd be entering everything into fitday.com or myfitnesspal so you KNOW what you're actually eating...this also means you have to measure and weigh, but that will only be temporary. |

Every taste just makes me want something that much more. |

Yeah i understand, but I am a fiend when it comes to milk. Drank it all the way through boot esp before PFT's lol never threw up once either. would a glass of milk and eggs for Bfast work ?
I know I am hard headed, but I really have to do the diet thing since i can't run it off anymore. I've never actually done a diet before so so im full of stupid when it comes to how to make it work. Quoted:

I could quit chocolate, sweets and processed junk cold turkey and be no skin off my back, but cutting milk out is going to be STUPID hard. I might have to do that kinda slow. Also I just got off the phone with another Marine and he said he is willing to help me shed the lbs and we're gonna start walking and stuff tomorrow morning and continue saturday mornings from here on out and as often as we can and my knee can handle it during the week. 24oz of milk is about 400 calories...if everything else is perfect that extra 400 calories could really screw up your loss. |

After just a couple weeks you really wont miss it at all. I used to drink 3, 44oz mtn dews every day Cutting it out completely is my suggestion. Every taste just makes me want something that much more. It wasn't to long ago i was the same way with Dr pepper now if I have some it's good, but if i don't I don't care. |

I know I am hard headed, but I really have to do the diet thing since i can't run it off anymore. I've never actually done a diet before so so im full of stupid when it comes to how to make it work. Will it work? I don't know...maybe maybe not. You should try to get some veggies in the morning as well. Were I in your position I would cut out the milk- the calorie cost is not worth it IMO. If you're really serious, you should temporarily cut it until you meet your goals. If you absolutely insist on it, at the very least enter everything into a calorie tracking program to see where you're at. |

If you absolutely insist on it, at the very least enter everything into a calorie tracking program to see where you're at. You're going to hate me, but really I wouldn't be drinking ANY juices. You need to make your calories count, taking in a bunch of sugar (juice) isn't giving you much benefit. Now, I know I said quality over quantity at FIRST, but once you get used to these new foods you're going to have to cut back on portions a little to lose weight. Look at it this way: let's say you're goal is to consume 2,000cals a day, which would result in modest weight loss. Now let's look at 2 potential days of eating at 2k cals. (actual calorie counts are just a guess here, I'm just showing you an example) Option 1: B: 5 eggs and saute'd broccoli L: 8oz of chicken and a salad with olive oil and vinegar D: 8 oz steak or fish with saute'd veggies and a salad Option 2: B: 3 eggs and milk and veggies L: 4 oz chicken, salad and juice D: 4oz steak or fish veggies, salad and juice Now, which day is going to leave you more satisfied and "full"? Day one of course. Juice isn't worth the cost in calories, and real whole food will serve you much better. Drink as much water as you want. 1-3 cups of black coffee is fine, unsweetened tea is ok too. Alcohol is going to slow down your progress. Juice is empty calories. |

What is with the vinegar thing? Cool! We like progress threads in here. You're much better off in here than in GD...most of us regulars have actual experience doing this stuff, we have guys that have lost tons of weight, we have some powerlifters, endurance athletes, and crossfitters. Another good resource is www.marksdailyapple.com Vinegar is just a good salad dressing, mixed with olive oil. No sugar or processed crap and it tastes good. You can use red wine vinegar or balsalmic, add some pepper, salt or even some dijon mustard. Good stuff. |

I've never even considered vinegar since the smell kills me. LOL i can see it now me piling mustard on a salad. I have experience in getting it off...VIA USMC, but now that im hurt that is compatable with me anymore haha. I have a river right by my house too, so rowing is sounding like a good option. My wife is a photographer so this could work out even better for us. What kind of boat or what ever do i need for this kinda stuff?
I loved spicy salads, is there anything like that out there that is healthy? Quoted:
