My wife and daughter went to Texas and came back with chigger bites all over their legs. Since we really don't have them here, all they could do is resort to Webmd help.. it's been 4 days of calamine lotion and they're still itching pretty bad.
So, ARFCOM, please help my family with some home remedies!

Polysporin and or a cortisone cream.

Something that will sofocate the bastards and relieve the symptoms.

I seem to recall clear nail polish over them.....suffocates them....not a bite, a burrowing parasite...but that was 45 years ago.......

I have had some success using a drop of nail polish on each bite.
Each one turns bright red and stops itching pretty quickly.

Works for maybe 20 or so but have not tried it with more.

I scratch the shit out of them and douse with alcohol, kills the itch.

Don't scratch

The nail polish thing was what mom did to us, but I can't recall how effective it was.

Clear nail polish also worked for me. Those little bastards ate me alive so killing them made me smile.

You can't "suffocate the bastards" because they aren't there.  Google it.

After bite. Active ingredient is Ammonia! Closest thing that works for temporary relief.

Put clear finger nail polish over the bites. It kills the chiggers.
4/28/2017 9:15:41 PM EDT

Clear nail polish killed the itch. That is all that I cared about. Chiggers there or not IDGAF.

I seem to remember taking a cigarette, removing the tobacco and spitting on it, making a paste.

Apply to bite

Also works with bee, wasp and yellow jacket stings.

I'd run 5% Permethrin on the bites to kill them just like scabies treatment. Then apply a tiny dab of lidocaine ointment to each spot to stop the itching.

I've used all kinds of anti itch creams the last few years because we have a ton of mosquitos here (prescription strength hydrocortisone, stop-itch, etc) and nothing works better than lidocaine, period. No waiting, no blobs of greasey shit, 100% effective.

It may be hard to find lidocaine ointment, but I'm pretty sure you could any canchor sore cream. Permethrin is found in lots of bug sprays, but you probably already have dog shampoo with it as the main ingredient.

Vagina anti itch cream.

Seriously.

I fully believe if you could develop red bugs into a bio weapon, you can rule the world.

Scratch 'em 'till they bleed, then pour alcohol on 'em. The stinging is a relief.

None of the redneck remedies work. There are not any chiggers 'buried in your skin'. I put some cortisone cream on the bites, it helps but it won't get rid of the itch completely.
4/28/2017 9:20:50 PM EDT
[#23]
The best thing is to spray your ankles and waistline to not get them.

Once you've got them your life is gonna suck for a while.

I've found scratching inflames them more and makes the bite marks last longer. Use alcohol to keep the area dry and clean. Even prednisone doesn't really help much.

Hit everything that went with them with some kind of insecticide to keep them from getting more bites. When I get chiggers(about 3-4 times a year) I wash all the clothes in hot water and give my boots a shot of bug spray to kill anything still living on there.

If you search online you get lots of info going both ways.  I've searched before and still couldn't decide which one to believe.

OP I'm a freaking chigger magnet for some reason.  I have to douse myself in bug spray if i work outside.  I've tried different things and think the one that helped some was using generic hemmeroid creme to relieve the itch.  Benedryl helps too, but it makes me sleepy so I only take it at night.  Honestly though as someone posted above you have to just wait it out.  With me it seems that scratching them until it breaks the skin and bleeds/scabs over is the only end to the suffering.

It won't work.  These old wives' tales stick around like herpes.

The only real remedy is time, and you can get some anti-itch cream to help your body ignore the itch.  But TBK1 is right.  The chiggers aren't there, so you can't suffocate them.

Some good DEET on your boots, jeans and legs will help prevent them.

We got some stuff called chigger-x, at CVS or Wallgreens.....it is a topical creme with one of the "caines" in it numbs things up nicely.  There is no bug in there it is just a bite.

One more time: Chiggers aren't on you. They bite and leave. There could be some on your clothes or shoes, so it's good to wash those and not wear the shoes for a while. Beyond, that. Wait. A long time.

Don't confuse chiggers with scabies or some other kind of mite. Those are in fact living on you. A mite under your skin looks and feels quite similar to a chigger bite.

Ive heard its their little sucking tube that gets knocked off and stays in your skin and creates the itching. Kinda makes sense why scratching till they bleed works so well....you just removed the part they left behind. ***just what I was told....I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night***

lulz at all the remedies to kill the mites that aren't there.

The only reliable remedy is prevention. Capsaicin takes away the itch and provides a relieving burn... for a while.

Probably better to just amputate, though.

Then it's just time to decide 45 or 9mm.
