And the sound chip on my motherboard only works now and then.  Somethings work fine, others, the sound is too low, and others, is like encryption.  I just downloaded the Southpark episode, and the sound was garbled, like many other things I have.

I redid the drivers w/ latest.

I even turned off the chip on the bios, and put in a pci soundcard w/ 2000 drivers.  EXACT same problem.  Can anyone help.  Thanks

It's driving me nuts that I can't watch a vid anymore.

Oh, this was a 2000 upgrade from 98

Hmmm, upgrading over the top of 98 was a bad idea. But if wiping the drive and starting anew is not an option...

Grab the latest drivers for your soundcard (I will assume intel integrated sound - no matter though) right click on My Comp

Select properties

Hit device manager -- select the soundcard, remove it (Not the codecs or all that crap - just the sound card)

now reboot. Should detect it....(fingers crossed)

When it says it found it - tell it to go to the directory where you unzipped the new drivers.

If that is cryptic let me know... but if you swapped out the board, yer prolly ok w./ those suggestions [:D]

just did that, didn't work, thinking I may have a codec problem.  Some things work fine, others not at all or garbled, any more suggestions?

You might try downloading the latest DirectX version from Microsoft.  There's a slim chance your Win 98 DirectX sound drivers are still in place and mucking things up.

Best of luck!

Are you using external speakers or just the onboard speaker?

El-Roto, did that, no change. Thanks for the try though.
Using a very good set of Labtec external speakers.

Any more suggestions?

I actually had the same problem when I upgraded from Win98.  I got it working some how.
Have you tried this?  Remove sound card.  Then boot your computer and install sound driver.
Shutdown, install the sound card and restart.
Let Win2K do the detecting when it boots.

yeah, did it twice.  When i upgraded, i only had the motherboard sound chip. Via technologies.  Then I uninstalled that, and turned it onn with the bios, and bought the card, and did an install.  Did jack shit.

But thank you for the try.

Anyone?

Actually I would think that should read "uninstall the sound driver"  This way there are no drives at all on the system when Windows tries to see the new hardware.

2000 was funny with upgrades, I'd vote for a reinstall from ground zero if you can.  Best chance for success.

I'm leaning more towards a codec/sofware problem since you do get sound sometimes and others it's screwy.  The other thing to try after the soundcard bit is get the latest 2000 service pack or run Windows Update from IE.

Oh wait...now I remembered.  I did full install.

Yeah,

Installing 2000 over an earlier OS can give you problems. You can email microsoft on their web page asking for tech help, but I'm going to guess they'll tell you to do a full format and install from scratch.

But you never know. Maybe they can help you.

Good luck.
