Hey guys,
I have been messing around with DreamWeaver MX, and Fireworks MX. Finally taught myself how to make a decent looking button in Fireworks. I am trying to make a NavBar, with different buttons.

I've got all my buttons made, and now I am trying to "assemble" the navbar. This is my problem. I'll open my first button, called Home, drag and drop it on to a new document, all fine and dandy.

Then I open my next button, called Products, drag and drop that onto the new document, and it pastes itself as a clone of the HOME button. So I end up with 2 home buttons right next to each other. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Have you sliced the images into the nav bar?  That should.  BTW, I love fireworks!

I go about it completely different.

I design it in photoshop, then slice and optimise it in fireworks.
I asign the behaviors of the rollovers in fireworks as well. Then select all the slices and export the entire page (or just the nav bar)
with all the html. Then fine tune everything in Dreamweaver and do all the coding and linkage there.

How do I slice the buttons into the navbar?

I have just been dragging the buttons from one document to another, in effect making my navbar.. Is there anything else I need to hold while dragging?

I am doing all the rollover effects in Fireworks too. Its a very powerfull program.

Draw the buttons over the nav bar and then make your slice.
Then make your hotspot for the linkage later.

Is there something I need to do to define this as a Navbar? Like I said, I've just been using an untitled document, and dragging my buttons in...

I insert one of my buttons onto the document. Then I clone it, drag it over a bit, and it sets the slice. When I go to modify my new button, that I just cloned, it affects them both.

It does this with the pre made buttons, or one I made. What am I missing?

One of those things that is extremely frustrating.

Thanks for your help guys.

Do you have photoshop ?

I don't know what you are doing exactly.
If you have created a nav bar when you export it just name it that.

I would creat the whole thing in photoshop with the buttons as graphics. Then open it in fireworks.

But if not then you can still create it in fireworks.
Just pay attention to the layers as you create each element.
The button should be just graphics as you create them. I don't know why you are dragging and dropping them.

Are you trying to make rollover effects ?

Its pretty hard to explain. I'll go into more detail. I really appreciate the help.

I am doing all of this in the latest version of FireWorks, DW is not involved yet. I created a new document. I then chose Insert, New button, and went through all of the steps to creating the button.  I then saved my button.

I then opened a new document, and dragged my completed button on to the workspace. Then I select the button and clone it various times, so I have a row of buttons that all say "Home" They are all sliced by red lines. I then chose my second button and attepmt to modify it. When I do modify the text. It changes the text for all of the buttons I have on the workspace. Is there something I need to do to define this as a Navbar? I have been looking through various tutorials on the web, and been following them, but I am stuck here..

Any help is apprecieated, thanks.

Each time you type text, it should be its own layer. If not, click the new layer icon in the properties box at the bottom right of the layers tool pallet. This should manually make it a new layer.

I do this completely different so I can't really diagnose the issue you are having.

Im gonna take a guess and say this for you.

In the tool pallet, make a box selection, then insert your button there.
Then maually type in what you want. Then select both the button and the text and group them.
Then do the same for the rest of the buttons.

or

In your document, Make the button there. Don't type the text on the button but out to the side. Do this for each button. Then move them over on top of the button.
Maybe since you have pasted the button over and over, Its treating the text the same way.???

If this web site is all done in tables then the nav will be named what ever the page is you want.

So if you are using the same nav for all pages, the export it each time naming it the pages that coinside with each catagory of the nav bar.
Home.htm
Contac.htm
about us.htm

Get it ?

Or export it as index.htm, onec and open it in dreamweaver, make the modifications there, and save that new page as, whatever.htm -example.

Hope this helps.

Its much easier to create it in photoshop and then open it up in fireworks and then slice it up.

I guessing you just need the buttons. So maybe try and export just the buttons as new gifs, and import them into your new html document in dreamweaver.

Thats all I can think of right now. Its not to hard when you get the hang of it.

I'll check back tomorrow. Its late at night where I am.
