I'm planning on picking up a revolver to be a gift for my father.
His big regret was not buying his old duty weapon from his Dept when they switched to Glocks in 1990.
IIRC, he was not able to buy the full size model he had carried as a patrolman because he was then assigned to homicide, but he was able to buy a Dept. marked S&W stainless snubbie, since that was the issued revolver for detectives.
He didn't carry that S&W though, instead carrying a Colt Cobra, so it doesn't mean much to him.
Anyhow, I'm planning to pick up whatever he carried on duty as a patrolman for all those years, get it reblued, new grips, proper dept. markings, etc and present it to him when he retires from police work.
He describes his duty weapon as follows.

Smith and Wesson revolver
4 inch heavy barrel
Double action
Blued finish
Square butt wooden service grips
Adjustable sights

In talking to him, he always called it a Model 10, but for the life of me, I can't find a Model 10 with target sights, so I am pretty sure he actually carried a K38 Combat Masterpiece.
This would jive with the stories he told me of using a .22LR S&W revolver that was built on a .38 frame (K22), in the academy that was an exact copy of what they carried.

What says ARFcom?
Model 10 or K38 Combat Masterpiece?
What price can I expect to pay?

Model 10s were all fixed sights.  You need to be looking for a Model 15.
