Button board with out finish coat is my guess.
My kitchen has the same setup with the boards for nailing cabinets to walls. Could be gypsum lath? Some of my house has what looks like rough cement board that was plastered over. It's more Crumbly then cement board and has a expanded metal mesh running through It. The country on a whole wasn't really standardized with how things were done untill the 60s. Before that a lot of building techniques were regional. Way more then they kinda still are. Started in on the coasts in the 50s and worked its way into the midwest. Deepening on where your at your walls may be from what most would consider an older technique. As an example my house was wired with knob and tube and it was built in 1940. I have yet to find a single resource that stays K&T was used past the mid 20s. |
