Ok, my girlfriend closed her laptop a couple of hours ago instead of turning it off. We left it alone until a couple of minutes ago. Then, when we tried to turn it back on, the screen wouldn't light up. It makes noises like the hard drive is working, but the screen won't turn on. I've restarted it multiple times, but the screen still won't turn on. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? She has a toshiba laptop if that helps.

It's possible that it's attempting to use the external video port, rather than the LCD. You can switch back and forth by using the function key and whatever key on your laptop that switches displays (on my Thinkpad it's F7).

Toshiba,  send it back to the factory.

The video card has possibly failed internally.  Repair ticket back to factory

Shine a flashlight on the screen. You might see it is actually displaying something but the backlight wont turn on.

My fathers laptop had a bug where if you closed the screen and unplugged the power the backlight may not turn on when you opened it. To fix it you would have to plug in the power, close the lid, and unplug the power and it would toggle it back on.

Try doing what you did to it again. Was it in hibernation when you opened it back up?  try turning it on and closing the lid and letting it sit for a while again. There is a way to beat this if you actually see things on the screen when you shine a flashlight on it. You might be able just to see enough to properly shut it down and then start it up again to reset it.

I can't see anything on the screen, but it was in hibernation when I opened it back up. I'll let it sit for a while and see if it will kick back on.

My Compaq does that sometimes.  Turn it off even if you have to unplug the battery.  Let it sit for about 15 minutes then turn it back on.

i was gonna suggest the battery removal also

if that doesn't fix it hook it up to a external monitor and see if it works then.   your backlight  or invert in the display could have crapped out
