My friend is going to debate against the ban on semi-automatic firearms and also private handguns (not necessarily CCW).  He would like to get as much info as possible, but it all needs to be concrete, e.g. statistics, articles, journals, or graphs.  He already knows a lot about firearm bans, but he needs concrete proof that they don’t work and we’re better off having firearms.

Thanks In advance

Here's your argument: it doesn't matter wtf the stats are, because until 3/4 of the states vote to amend the Constitution, the 2nd Amendment is the law of the land.

(1) Get some books from John Lott.

(2) Go online or to the library and find the National Academy of Sciences report which states that it cannot conclude that gun control has any effect on crime.

From Friend: I cannot just say it's the law of the land, because most of these people want to ammend the constituion, or just ban things out right. That's why I need the statistics or something of the sort and I cannot find any.

The irony of that is that the BoR is intended to enumerate existing rights.  In other words, the rights listed in the BoR exist even if there is no BoR.  The only reason there is a BoR is that the anti-federalists knew that the constitution would not be followed forever and some rights needed to be directly spelled out.

Basically, anyone who wants to ban guns, doesn't give a shit about the constitution, or rights for that matter.

Just ask, "If there was no first amendment, would you still have the right to free speech?"

3/4 is needed for ratification of an Amendment.

But yeah.  Its not really a debate on guns.  Its a debate on rights.

Good call,  I did a paper on gun control(and how it sucks) last semester.  DC homicide rate for 2006 was 35.8 per 100,000  Utah's was 1.9.  I recall stats that showed your chances of being killed in DC were only slightly lower than the likelyhood of being robbed in UT.

On my term paper last year, I used John Lotts "More Guns Less Crime" more than any other pro gun book that I checked out. It had that much information, thou I remember it to be a bit dated, mostly 90's I believe.
