Bought a used Norinco SKS Paratrooper model. At some point in its life someone machined the receiver to accept a double-stack magazine. I bought it with one 5-round magazine. Somewhere on the forums I read that the SKS double-stack uses AK-47 magazines. So then I bought some 30-round AK magazines from Cabela's but the rear tang does not reach the magazine lock. Anybody know where I can get some more magazines for this rifle? I would like to get a higher capacity than 5. By the way for some reason I can not load more than 4 rounds and close the bolt. It seems that the when 5 rounds are loaded in the magazine the tip of bullet hangs up on the chamber when the bolt attempts to close. Tried deburring the chamber a little but no help. |
| IIRC, with some of those conversions, the front of the mag engaged a pin at the lower front of the mag well and locked up at the back with the original magazine box latch. If this is the case with yours, it uses a prorietary magazine that I haven't seen in years. |
| AK mags only work in the SKS D or M models. A standard SKS paratrooper was designed for a fixed 10 round mag. The so called duckbill mags made as a high cap replacement are all crap and getting one to actually work would take more effort than getting my 15 year old son to do the dishes. Even then, my 15 year old would be more reliable and thats not saying much. |

The SKS magazine well was a double stack to begin with. Does the 5 rd mag have a big lug extending forward from the mag? If so your SKS will only take SKS mags. If it doesn't and there is no stock material missing forward of the magazine well, it was converted to AK mags. What do you have? |
The wooden stock has the clearance cut-out for the SKS mags. I believe it is a SKS-D model. Sorry I don't know much about SKS's. It looks very similar to this magazine: http://www.mainemilitary.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=69&idproduct=1110 |
Ok will do. I won't have it up until tonight or tomorrow morning. Please advise on how to post pics in this forum. I bought the gun for $225 with 1200 rounds of surplus Russian ammo in a lead pan with the pan in a military crate so I figured as long as it shoots it is probably worth it. |
Agreed. In essence, you bought the ammo and got a free gun with it. |
