Let's say you have a irresponsible teenager and you want to track their car. What is a good way to track the car and know where it is at all times? I assume there is some kind of GPS device you can stick under the bottom of the car and then track the car on a webpage?????

If they're irresponsible, why the hell do you let them have a a car?

Did I ask for advice on whether or not I should let them have a car?

I'm guessing the kid probably has a cell phone.  Most cell carriers offer a parental tracking service for $10/mo that includes real-time GPS tracking, among other things.  Verizon's Family Locator is one example.
As far as getting real-time tracking without using the kid's phone, the cheaper option might be to just get one of these phones anyways and hard-wire the charger somewhere in the trunk or behind the dash.  I also seem to remember that zoombak's tracking subscription was reasonably priced, but I can't find the pricing on their site now.

If you don't need real-time monitoring, something like this may work.

You would be better off turning on the tracking feature on the teenagers cellphone.  I know Verizon has this service.  I'm sure others do.

Tracking devices are cars come in a couple different setups.  There is a stand alone passive recording device.  You have to physically go out retrieve the device and download the information.  Some of them can be tied into the vehicles power system some are self powered.  They claim these devices will work in a glove box or other compartment but I don't see how, they only use GPS signals.  They make a huge magnetic case that can be stuck under the vehicle.  Again, if they just use satellites I don't see how they work under a vehicle.

The better units use satellites and cellphone signals.  They are an active unit that will transmit the location in real time.  They too can be self powered or connected to the vehicles power.  They also use a cellphone service for transmitting the location.  The cost of the services depend on how much data you need to transmitt.  Some companies will give you a fixed number of location transmittals per month, anything over that and you pay extra.  Others make you go online and request data before they transmitt.  The best companies are the ones that keep a history, transmit constantly, and everything is unlimited.

For the good units with mounting hardware they start around $500 plus service activation, plus a monthly service fee of around $50.

No, but what you are asking for may very well be ILLEGAL where you are.

We don't know you, you could be an asshole ex-wife for all we know.  Think we are obligated to help someone break the law or cause a bunch of disruption in some poor innocent person's life?

If you are the dad and the kid is under 18, you have the authority to fix this without technical measures.  If you don't have the authority, you don't have the right to use technical measures either.
