I'm setting up my den Studio system and have had a problem.  My PA will do fine for about ten minutes then drop out then after a minute or two drop back in.

What I have is a Crate PA8, 300 watts X 2, two Crate bipod mounted 15s with horns, and a 15" wedge monitor.  The system has just set idle not plugged in for years.  I have the two 15's on one output the monitor on another. I run the thing well below feedback and typical mic, though not exclusive, is a Shure 58. Right now I'm about 50% on the main control and 2 on the mic input.  I have checked the connections, even cleaned the contacts.  The PA does not have clipping indicators.  My next step is to take it apart and clean the heat sinks and circuit boards after I try 2 on the main control and 5 on the input control.

Any ideas?

Next question, worse case I need to replace it, I'm looking at Peavey, Behringer, and Gear One.  What do you think of those?  The Phonic would be a much more cost effective option but I know nothing about them and kind of afraid of the brand name.  Also a 200 watt system instead of 300 or 400 watt would be more cost effective.  That I don't know if it will push it enough as it needs to keep up with a Twin 12 amp turn up enough the effects are optimal. I do have a PA effects send box, I use to use on the Crate PA 8.  Effects built in would be nice, things like reverb, chamber effects, etc.

What I can tell you is my stage days are gone and what I'm looking for is a studio system, for mostly just plug and play with at most a couple friends dropping by to play some.  My den's a big room, about 20'x60'.  It is below ground so my house won't be surrounded by cops.   My current PA is 300 watts X 2 and I've yet to turn it up more than half way.  What it once was and my goal is about like a small bar, which is basically what my den is, wet bar, table and chairs, and then livingroom suit where the stage would be.

Thanks for any help.  Its been a while since I set up any gear and or bought new stuff.  I kind of inhereted the stuff I have from bands I was in and got kind of use to having it around and would like to again.

That thing cutting out could be anything number of things. I would first check for any leaky capacitors, though. Then if that wasn't it, I would carefully look over all the connections to see if corrosion did something to one of them.

As far as new gear goes, my drummer has his own PA setup and has been running a Behringer 16 channel powered mixer. Can't remember the model number, but it's held up well. Even the times his kids overflowed the bath tub and the water trickled into the basement and onto the mixer hasn't fazed it. And I have a Behringer FCB-1010 midi foot controller, and it's held up well. People knock Behringer for being cheap Chinese built gear, and it is cheap Chinese gear, but from what I've seen, it holds up well.

But I would see if the cutting out is in the poweramp of your existing mixer first, or whether it's in the mixer portion of the mixer. If it's in the poweramp of the mixer, I would just not use that part and run the outputs to an external poweramp. I prefer Crown for that type of thing, but QSC, behringer and others would be plenty good enough for your situation. It would also be a good opportunity to throw a dual 31 band EQ in the rack. Very powerful tool that can really let you dial things in for the room.

It could also be something stupidly simple as a bad jack or cable.

That looks like a 1 channel rated at 150 watts @4 ohms. It claims 2 ohm minimum, I wouldn't try it. How many ohms are your cabs? Have you tried only connecting one? Have you tried multiple inputs? Have you tried bypassing the fx loop?

Cheap replacement for the box might be a behringer europower pmp500. 350 bucks, 2 channel output, input trim pots and faders.  (I have heard that "B" is more reliable than they used to be, I have an x-32 rack and it has been great)

Cheapest way to make noise again might be to use the main outs on the front of your crate and use a power amp, behringer inuke 1000 is 150 bucks. (That is assuming your crate just has a fault in the power amp section!)

Or buy the 150 amp and a samson mxp124 for 80 bucks if 4 channels is enough,
Or a behringer x1222usb for 200 bucks and get 6 channels in and usb recording

Go digi and get a behringer xr12 x air for 250
Or a soundcraft ui12 for 300 (I have read that the soundcraft is noisy if you use phantom power.
