What is a knock sensor for? My dealer told me my 2000 V70 needs one. Only light on is the service light, but it goes out 2-3 mile after running. I can not afford the cost at the dealer, will this harm the car? I drive it 40 miles a day. It is slower than before and gets crappy milege.
Thanks for the help! |

The knock sensor pulls ignition timing in the event of preignition or ping. It's a piezo-electric type sensor, meaning it generates a voltage when struck (or when it detects vibrations), which shoots a signal back to the PCM to retard the ignition timing until the vibes (or pinging) stops.
You should probably get it squared away as soon as possible. |

It detects pinging, and when it senses this condition it will retard the timing, when it doesn't the ECU will advance timing. Without it the PCM is going to retard your timing to a level set at the factory that will not allow detonation as long as you are using the correct fuel.
Without the knock sensor working correctly your ignition timing is being retarded to a point that the engine is not running efficiently. I have never changed one on a Volvo, so I can't help you with a difficulty level. |

I purchased the parts, sensor, intake gasket, etc and was thinking about doing it myself. Then I was told to have a PVC kit on hand before I start.
Is this something I can do? It all started 2-3 years ago, It gets me to work everyday 20 miles at 50-65 mph. Thanks for the help |
OMG, I will try never to Fuck Up again
