Paging all computer gurus. I'm running windows XP home. Two days ago we could not access the net. The rest of the computer seem to be operating fine. I've run system restore, pinged the computer to the ISP, and finally hooked up an older ME edition to verify that it wasn't a modem or wiring problem. (the old ME system works fine) I ultimately put the 'puter on safe mode and I can access the net. Any suggestions (short of target practice) to help me through my troubled times? |

There are three things that you need to surf the net: 1) User name and password for your ISP. Sounds like this isn't the problem as you're using the same with the ME computer. 2) TCP/IP protocol stack installed - you're most likely using DHCP portion of the stack where your IP addess is provided to you after you've verified your user name and password. 3) The address to a DNS server. If you can ping 66.202.29.77 but not www.ar15.com you have the wrong address to the DNS or it's not working. Most firewalls are smart enough to see you trying to get out and unless you've told them otherwise ... they'll let you out to the Internet. Were you able to ping with the "broken" configureation? |

if everything WAS working there are three possibilities: 1) your provider is having technical problems. (there is nothing you can do but wait) 2) something has changed about your hardware configuration. (something broke) 3) something has changed about your software configuration: a virus/spyware/software corruption may have mucked up your windows. if you run connection wizard from internet explorer and your modem choice is greyed out you will probably need to re-install windows xp using the "replace windows" option. you will not lose programs or data but you will have to re-install most programs to make them work in your new windows. |

Update: Whew!!!! I knew I could count on you guys! Okay, here's what happened. Dissipator: I was running my firewall. I disabled it but to no avail. Paul: I tried to ping the addy you provided with a 100% loss. No good. Missouri: Again, I disabled the firewall, no good. Zoomer: Unplugged it yesterday, didn't work. thejoker: Yep, you nailed it. I reinstalled XP, that took care of it. Only Hits: When you're going on safe, you have the option of running network. Go into "Run", type "msconfig", and you can boot in safe mode and include network as an option. I really thought I was screwed. Thanks for the help!! I'm takin' you all out for dinner and suds! |
