I am buying a laptop and I want to hook it up to my DSL service.
My DSL runs through the modem, a firewall router and then my desktop.

Is there something that I can attach to one of the router out ports to make it into a secure wireless connection for the laptop?

I want to do it "cheap", meaning I don't want to have to replace the router I have - unless it's gonna be cheaper to do so.

You can buy a wireless access point for close to the same price as a wireless router so you may as well get a new 802.11g router. You can hook up the desktop with an ehternet cable and go wireless with the laptop. Just make sure you set up the security on the wireless part!

There is such a thing as a wireless LAN connection but you may as well just get a wireless router.

Nothing can be done cheap.

A Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point for about $75, that will plug in to one of the out ports on my current router.

A Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router for about $90.

Any suggestions?

Id just go with the wireless router less equip to mess up.  If you laptops wireless NIC does not support Wireless G its a waste of money to get the Wirelss G router get the Wireless B and save afew bucks.

If  it is wireless G ready get the wireless G router.

The wireless access point built-in to the router/firewall is the way to go.

You could set-up a peer-to-peer network between your desktop and laptop using an 802.11 NIC in each machine and then set-up Internet sharing on the desktop machine.

I like the DLink wireless router - I've got a USR one that's a piece of shit.

I am going to keep the desk top hard wired with Cat5 and go with a the wireless Linksys and a 802.11 NIC for the lap top.

I'll be selling my router in the E/E in a bit.

And I am getting a compaq laptop bases on what you have pointed out Paul.
