About six years ago, I was keeping a close eye on the war in Iraq. I was 34 years old and sick of my dead-end job and I wanted to be apart of the (server my country) war on terror.
I was a home owner and my sister just had a bad divorce so I told her she and her two kids could just move in to my place and pay me whatever, whenever she could. After Six years in the Army I'm once again an Civilian. As a Civilian, I'm not making a lot of money, my sister had to move out so I could sell my home(I can't afford it anymore). I'm getting some money from the G.I bill for school, but the big problem is I'm 41 years old now. I'm going to have to try to get something in two years but I don't know what. I'm going for computer and electric right now and the math is killing me and I really hate it. I would love to be a cop, I always wanted to be one, but I think I'm too old now. What can a 41 years old man take at school? I'll be 43 once I'm out of school and trying to find a job. I'm I to old to be a cop? |

Are you gonna want to be working nights with tues/weds off? Working Christmas etc. Do you have a familiy? Are you gonna want to be pushing a squad car for the next 20-25years before retirment? If I was in your shoes I would get into the medical field, xray tech, RN etc. Much better job outlook IMHO. J- |

Here is how it is here:
Only persons who are less than 35 years of age on the first date of the application period for the examination may be appointed as a Police Officer.
Exception to Age Requirements: All persons who were engaged in military duty as defined in Section 243 of the New York Military Law may deduct from their actual age the length of time spent in such military duty, provided the total deduction for military duty does not exceed six years. |

Thanks for the info.
I'm going to talk to some of the Criminal Justice instructors at ITT-Tech and see what they have to say about my age and the state of Ohio. I'm 41 now until the end of this year, so I should be around 43ish once I'm done at ITT-Tech then about 6 months at Ohio Police Academy. That's good news about the six years I have with the Army that would lower my age, but I don't know if that is for when a Department picks me up or what. WOW, I hope this works out. Make sure you talk to actual departments too, as well as the academy. It's in the school's best interest to lie to you about your prospects. Ok, but who would I talk to at an department? Just any policeman? Recruiting officer/team or an admin Sgt. Do some ride alongs and maybe go the reserve route to get your foot in the door as now is a bad time to enter LE. Brian |
