So I'll keep it short and sweet. I use to love pitbulls 50k worth but unfotunately now I am dogless and surrounded by cats. What is a good dog for me that will not try to harm the cats I'm surrounded by I dang sure know that a pedigreed pitbull is out of question. I'm mainly looking for 1 that gets along with other animals house trains easily. Not hard head like a bulldog would be nice too lol. Just look for opinions

Go to the pound and see what adopts you.
Labs, weimeriners, and setters are all good with cats in my experience.

Have you tried petfinder.com?  They usually list if a dog is cat friendly or not.

Call the pound and tell them you want a dog that gets along with cats.  They even have them that are already housetrained!
The people who work there usually know the dogs pretty well.  Tell them what you are looking for and they'll bend over backwards to get a dog in a good home.

There are usually all sorts of breed rescue agencies all over the country. My first recommendation is go to the humane society, or pound's web site and look for a dog there.  If you are set on a pure breed, try one of the rescue sites.

We got our last dog from death row at the humane society.  He has turned into a wonderful addition to my two Border Collies.  Although he was really sick when we got him, he has turned around, and is healthy with a glorious coat.  He weighted 5 pounds 2 ounces when adopted, and you could count his ribs and vertebrae by running your finger along the bones because he was so sick and just wanted to die..  Now he weighs 8 pounds 7 ounces, and is doing fabulous.  He is worth every penny we paid for all the surgery and adoption fees.  I highly recommend you consider saving someone's (some dog's) life.

Why not get another pitbull??
I LOVE mine and he gets along great with my wifes 2 cats...Hell his best animal friend at the house is the younger kitten thats about 1 1/2 years old, They play NONSTOP and he has a blast with her but makes sure to NEVER harm her

He was a rescue dog when I got him as he was previously being used as a "bait dog" to train other pitbulls to fight and become aggressive so because of that he does have some permanent nerve damage on his face which causes his lip to curl up on its own which is the reason I named him elvis

Another dog that I used to have with one of my ex's which was a AMAZING dog was a pembroke welsh corgi, They dont get real large maybe 30-40 pounds and they have loads of energy and are just about as fun as you can get a dog to be

Anatolian Shepherd/Kangal Dog..

They're livestock guardians so they are very good with protecting animals or people that they see as theirs..

For example, my Anatolian won't let a stranger anywhere near my lady without proper introduction..

Call the humane society and ask if they have a dog that's good with cats.

For a while, I had a dog that had been raised with cats.  It played like a cat, and actually had a hard time getting along with other dogs.

Why cant you get another pit with cats? we have 4 cats and our pit loves the cats..
cats where here first.. pit came later.
same with the boxer.
They all get along..
but judging from your post.. you dont need a pit.. you need a poodle

The wife's cat (damn Bengal terrorist) routinely attacks my GSD and my pit.  They both generally tolerate her antics and allow her to go on believing she actually is a large jungle cat...

Its apparent that dog hates the cat and is attempting to kill it by sitting on it!

what is your goal?

If you ONLY want a companion dog and that is your only concern, then go to the pound and get one.

do you specifically want a purebred and a common dog that is good with cats?

if you can't have a pitbull, would you still like to turn heads with an exotic dog?

what about a Vizsla?

as a pit owner you probably have found out that biggest is not always best

how about a Kooikerhondje also known as a Kooiker Hound for a more compact friend

it is an ancient dutch dog that was used to lure ducks into traps

even if they sometimes act like ninjas

it is a smaller dog, but definately not a toy-sized dog

Very well, slowly getting the muscles in his leg to be the same as the other, but he's able to go on long walks and short runs with me

Best money I've ever spent...  Well, not the best, but most rewarding.

All my dogs are fine with the cat, though sometimes they drive the cat a little nuts playing with him.

Bernese Mountain Dog (awesome dog with a great "personality"):

Great Pyrenees (yes, he's just playing :) he's the laid back one):

Our two SPCA dogs have been great with our cat as well.  One is a lab/pix mix.

my suggestion is to figure out the qualities you want in a dog.  do you want long hair, or short hair? how big of a dog do you want?  how much time and energy do you want the dog to have? look at the medical history of the dog breed.   www.dogbreedinfo.com has alot of great info.

humane societies and rescues are great places to find dogs.  if your getting a pure breed, take some time and do some research on the breeders.

and the breed i am going to throw out for suggestion is the Catahoula.  ours just turned 1 and has tons of character. he is about 65lbs and about 23" at the shoulder and just about full grown.

here are a few pics of him as a puppy.

and this one is him at 5 weeks old

Aussies do well with cats, are smart, but require a very active, willing home with owners who are consistently smarter than their dogs...
