OK...I'm going to switch to a vehicle allowance in about 6 months for a work related vehicle. I'm a big dude, and driving in a Ford Escape stinks.

I love to surf fish, so 4WD (not AWD) is a MUST have.

I'll be looking at certified pre-owned vehicles with under 30K miles on them.

Pros of the Dodge 2500 Megacab.

Diesel engine longevity. Decent fuel economy with a chip/tune on the highway (majority of my miles). I know if I maintain it...200K miles is not out of the question.

Real truck 4WD.

It's a REAL truck...meaning I think it'd take more abuse than an SUV would.

It's higher off the ground...and easier to fit a biga$$ iron bumper on the front so if I have an interaction with wildlife on the road...I could probably just scrape/hose it off and go about my business.

Cons to the Dodge.

It's a Dodge (sorry...had to say it)
Diesel fuel is more expensive.
Maintenance costs are more expensive.

Pros to the Tahoe/Yukon
Cheaper fuel costs
Cheaper maintenace costs
Can easily carry 6 adults or possibly more with 3rd row seating
Real 4WD available.

Cons.

It's a Chevy/GM
Once I hit 100-120K miles, I'll probably have to trade it/sell it
It just doesn't strike me as tough as the Dodge Ram 2500.

Any input, thoughts, or opinions from those of you that own either or both of these would be appreciated.

I did not put any Ford Products on there...if I did, it'd be a 1/2 ton FX4. The Super Dutys don't appeal to me...to many problems with emmissions/head gaskets/bad history with them.

UNless you're going to be towing enough to justify the 3/4 ton springs and diesel, a 1/2 ton 4x4 of your choice will do everything you ask

everything will be more expensive with a diesel (the truck itself, tires, oil changes, fuel, anything else that needs replacement).

I'd go with the ford personally, but since the choice is between dodge and gm,I'd go with gm (in my opinion they are built better). I worked at a dodge dealership in the detail area. I got real sick of pushing the dodge diesels into the mechanic bays. The dodges that ran on regular fuel seemed to run fine.

I am not sure what year of Tahoe you are looking at.  I just traded my 98 Silverado 1500 with 205k on it with a lot of beach driving.  I had minimal problems.  Worst was an intake gasket leak.  Which I fixed myself.  The newer ones don't have a problem with this I don't believe.  You should be able to easily get 200k out of a Tahoe.  My wife traded hers with 175k on it.  With a Tahoe I would recommend a transmission cooler if it doesn't have one.

My current Tahoe Z71 is an '05 with 87K miles on it.  Most of those miles are towing an enclosed trailer.  No major issues.  Rear wiper stopped working.  Haven't looked into yet.  Other than that nothing.  I've been rear ended 3 times so the rear bumper needs replacing at this point though.

How about a GMC truck / tahoe with the 6.2 or a 1/2 ton Ram with a hemi

It's a Cummins diesel engine covered up by something shaped like a truck

Do not support Government Motors.

Beyond that take your pick I would lean towards Ford.

Has no barring at all on OPs question.

Because you don't support the company has nothing to do with their vehicles.  Just like the people who are anti Levi have nothing to do with their jeans and the people who are anti-colt have nothing do do with their rifles.  Don't project your anti-GM agenda on someone who is simply looking for a mode of transportation that best suits them

If you'll read the post...you'll see I'm looking at vehicles that have 30K or less miles...the majority of those vehicles are 2007-2008 vehicles...prior to any bailouts.

Do you need towing capacity? If so, how much?

I'd suggest a Toyota 4Runner if you're looking for a capable and reliable true 4WD vehicle.

Resale value helps drive vehicle sales and is determined by market value which drops if demand does.

One of the most effective tools we have to correct the course of our country is our wallet sadly too many on the right fail to realize this.

Point taken.  That's a much better argument than the typical "Fuck GM," or "fuck Obama motors" that the majority of the chest beaters can muster.

The Yota's are fine vehicles but a couple of things.

I don't like the seating position...the last time I drove a 4Runner...my legs stuck straight forward, like in a car, and was uncomfortable...also, I don't think any of the Toyota products have locking differentials.

I drove a new Tundra a few weeks ago...and loved the performance, but the interior felt cheap, the bed felt flimsy, and felt like the truck needed some help.  The engine, transmission, brakes, differential were tough as anything I'd ever seen...but the rest of the truck...I wasn't impressed.

If Toyota would take that 5.7L engine and put it in a 3300 pound coupe (Mustang/Camaro/Challenger killer)....I'd be interested in that in a heart beat...but it wouldn't get me down the beach worth a dern.

I run two Ram 1500/hemis.  The 4x4 has a rear limited slip and front locker from the factory.  This truck will tow 6000 pounds effortlessly.  It will actually tow much more than its rating, like a backhoe tractor on a heavy trailer, but the rear wheel bearings and rear end gears will not be loving you long................(a relative did this)

The best truck I ever had in the sand was my '88 S10...  Open diffs front and rear, and never got stuck even in wet red stuff...

Don't confuse what is needed for sand with what is needed rock crawling.  Sand is about keeping things cool, not articulation and big axles...
