Hello I'm attempting to build a website and I've run into a brick wall and could use some input.  No, I am not an expert at webdesign, yes a good while ago I slept at a Holiday Inn.

What I'm attempting to do is to place a page which would indicate which of two employees are open for work––a first up, first out sort of a deal.  I would like to have it where of the two employees the one first up could indicate that he's up, so that all other employees could read the results.

Clear as mud?  Will send picture of my gun for help  Patty (Yes, I know its been a very long time!)

How often do they swap?

What triggers unavailability?

Why does unavailability matter?  Is there a shopping cart or contact form or something that relies on it?

What are you building the website from?

How often do they swap? it can be as often as daily or as seldom as a couple of times a week

What triggers unavailability? my boyfriend works on call for the railroad, if a regular employee lays off (takes time off) its his job to cover the shift.  the page is to give the regular employees a place to look to see where to call and my boyfriend a place to see if he has to work.

Why does unavailability matter? Is there a shopping cart or contact form or something that relies on it? it gives my boyfriend a place to see if he has to prepare to work, and his co-workers some management to know which of the extras they should call.

What are you building the website from? from home.    I know some HTML, I'm using some cheats.  I'm trying to keep it simple.

Thanks for your help!  Patty

So the other employees would check the site to see who to call to sub for them if they have to take time off?

And your bf wouldn't check the site, but would update it if he's called in?

Or would you update it for him?

Or are shifts scheduled far enough in advance that it's more like a shift calendar for everyone?

I'd almost think that something like twitter would be most appropriate.  Create a twitter account for his status.  When he's out, post a twitter thing saying "not available, call Jim", when he's back, post a "back in service, call me" thing.  Or make it neutral, "Jim is now available to cover all shifts", then "Tom is now available to cover all shifts".

And employees would just check the account for the latest update.

Not sure if someone else has a better idea, but that one seems simple enough to me, and any idiot with a smartphone can update it from wherever.

If you're not up to building a few pages or one page with rich content, twitter is probably your best bet, as JBlitzen suggested.

HTML won't necessarily help you here, you need to know some kind of server-side scripting language.

This is the correct answer.

A web site is the wrong tool for this.  A Facebook group, Twitter, email list would all be faster to set up, work better, and not require hours and hours of learning.

Heck, even free hosted blog software with everybody as "members" would work. (Blogspot used to do that...)

Not all the yardmasters use facebook/twitter.  I don't think that would fly.  On the page which the shift workers would need someone to fill their shift I have this set up so it would notify the two extras (my boyfriend and another guy).  What I need is some type of a button which could be clicked to show whose first up to receive work, whose second up.

If they already have a website, you can easily embed a twitter stream into it.  That's just HTML.

Then only your bf and the other sub are actually updating twitter.  Everyone else is just looking at "their" page and seeing the results.

Hey Dozzer!  Its good to see you!

Okay, I have never even logged on to twitter, I can barely manage facebook.  I only log onto facebook enough to give my arfcommers hell and to say hello to my kids and sisters.  What's the skinny on twitter? I know my boyfriend does not twitter (at least I don't think he does).

I really appreciate everyone's time!  Patty

A document that multiple people can edit or read, you say?

Why not a Google Doc? Add everyone's google accounts and away you go.

I"ve been wondering about this too.  Even a google blog might work too.
